Washtenaw Community College (WCC) is actively seeking a detail-oriented WCC Student to provide technical writing and document formatting support to faculty. This role is ideal for students interested in technical communication, editing, and document design. The student employee will work directly with faculty clients to clarify project needs, draft and revise content, and produce clear, consistent Open Educational Resources (OER). The successful candidate must be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of 6 (six) credit hours throughout employment. Continuation of employment is reviewed at the end of each semester.
Position Summary:
The Part-time Technical Writing - General Fund Student will support faculty-led projects by drafting, editing, and formatting instructional and technical materials (primarily OER content). The student will gather requirements from faculty clients, apply templates and style standards, and ensure deliverables are accurate, easy to follow, and accessible. While in the position, the successful candidate will build skills in technical writing, editing and proofreading, document formatting, client communication, time management, and project organization.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Meet with faculty clients to identify goals, audience, scope, deliverables, and timelines for assigned projects.
  • Draft, edit, and revise technical and instructional content for clarity, accuracy, organization, and consistency.
  • Format documents using Microsoft Word and Google Docs, applying headings/styles, page layout, tables, figures, and consistent typography.
  • Create and maintain document templates, quick-reference guides, and standardized formatting for recurring project needs.
  • Proofread and quality-check final deliverables for grammar, spelling, citation/formatting consistency, and adherence to any provided style guide.
  • Support basic document accessibility practices (for example: heading structure, readable tables, and descriptive text for images when applicable).
  • Maintain organized project files and version control in shared drives and follow established naming and submission conventions.
  • Communicate progress, questions, and risks to deadlines in a timely, professional manner; incorporate client feedback and revisions.
  • Maintain strict adherence to college processes and procedures; other duties as assigned.
  • Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support the effective performance of assigned duties, enhance productivity, improve communication and information management, support decision-making, and other responsibilities, while ensuring compliance with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.

Hours/Schedule:
This is a part-time position (not exceeding 20 hours per week) with varying hours that may include evenings and weekends, based on client meetings and project deadlines. Continuation of employment is reviewed at the end of each semester.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of 6 (six) credit hours for the length of employment.
  • Must have completed or be currently enrolled in ENG208, ENG218, or ENG209.
  • Strong written communication skills, including proficiency in English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to write for a specific audience and purpose and to translate complex information into clear, step-by-step instructions.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word and Google Docs (including formatting with styles/headings and page layout); ability to learn new tools quickly.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to proofread and apply consistent formatting standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and follow through on feedback and revisions.
  • Maintain a positive, organized, team-driven attitude while supporting our students, colleagues, and community.
  • Must be able to work directly with a diverse range of people including students, faculty, professionals and business owners.
  • Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI-supported tools. Ability to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.
