Responsibilities

Provide age-specific care based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the Fort Cavazos, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Inpatient Clinics; specific healthcare provider orders; the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient; and established policies and procedures.

The Healthcare Worker (HCW) performing services under this agreement shall have sufficient experience to adequately treat diseases and injuries, including but not limited to:

  • Assist with conscious/moderate sedation.

  • Provide pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative care.

  • Recover post-surgical patients, including post-cesarean section patients under general anesthesia.

  • Administer and support infusion therapy services.

  • Perform specialty-specific nursing procedures, including but not limited to:

    • 12 Lead EKG placement and monitoring.

    • Assist with PAP/Pelvic examinations and PAP smears.

    • Intravenous access devices (ports and catheters), Broviac/Hickman catheters, and PICC lines.

    • Eye, throat, nasal, and wound cultures.

    • Insertion and maintenance of oral and nasopharyngeal airways and positive pressure ventilation.

    • Visual acuity testing.

    • Telemetry monitoring.

    • Orthostatic (tilt) vital signs.

    • Wound cleaning and dressing changes.

    • Phlebotomy.

    • Eye, wound, and ear irrigation.

    • Sterile preparation for minor surgical procedures.

    • Medication administration per licensure and certification, including administering, titrating, assessing medications, and reversal agents.

    • Administer immunizations to all age groups following appropriate medical record review.

    • Accu-Chek/Finger stick testing.

    • Set up, operate, and monitor medical equipment.

    • Communicate with Providers, CNOIC, and COR regarding patient concerns.

    • Access and document in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

    • Complete patient histories, medication reconciliation, physical assessments, vital signs, behavioral health nursing assessments, measurements, and health screenings.

    • Provide patient and family education.

    • Participate in CODE responses and initiate emergency responses as required.

    • Respond to cardiopulmonary arrest and coordinate Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

    • Respond to neonatal resuscitation and coordinate Pediatric support.

    • Prepare examination rooms, assist providers during procedures, label and transport specimens for laboratory processing.

    • Clean, disinfect, and reassemble medical equipment.

    • Restock procedure rooms with supplies, forms, and linens.

    • Dispose of medical waste and soiled linens appropriately.

    • Notify appropriate points of contact regarding supply needs.

    • Follow all DHA, hospital policies, procedures, regulations, and Joint Commission (TJC) standards.

    • Schedule appointments using CHCS as needed.

    • Perform daily quality control checks on clinic glucose monitors.

    • Assist Front Desk operations as directed by clinic leadership.

    • Maintain a Competency Assessment Folder and complete all mandatory training.

    • Prepare the clinic for daily operations.

    • Transport patients safely throughout the medical facility.

    • Maintain peripheral venous lines.

OR RN Specific Core Duties

In addition to the general core duties above, the Operating Room Registered Nurse must be able to:

  • Assist Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and other providers during complex or potentially life-threatening procedures, including insertion of invasive lines, chest tubes, tracheotomies, and removal of foreign bodies from the trachea/endotracheal tubes and nasogastric tubes.

  • Assist with conscious/moderate sedation.

  • Provide pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative nursing care.

  • Recover post-surgical patients, including post-cesarean section patients under general anesthesia.

  • Administer and support infusion therapy services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree: Associate Degree

  • Graduate from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience within the last two (2) years prior to contract execution, including the care of adults and newborns.

  • Certifications: Must be obtained through an American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) training program. Online-only certifications will not be accepted.
