Description
This position will be weekend and evening shifts (training could be all hours of service). The successful candidate will be required to obtain their Commercial Driver License (Link Transit will provide the paid CDL training.) Candidate must have an acceptable driving record (No chargeable accidents. No more than one moving violation in the past 3 years. No violations of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. No felony convictions while operating a commercial vehicle.)
Preference will be given to those candidates with transit and/or dispatch experience.
$31.70 - $39.59/hour(hiring range $31.70 - $33.31)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Operation Assistant Manager or designee, this position dispatches and coordinates movement of transportation service vehicles to various locations within the Agency's service area, receives requests for paratransit and Dial a Ride (DART) services schedules trips to maximize customer service and cost-effectiveness.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop daily service schedules by assigning trips to appropriate vehicles in order to maximize Agency services and system performance.
Assist with driver check-in to determine fit for duty, document late and no shows, etc.
Communicate with drivers and guest services (through radio, cell phone, e-mail and instant messaging); receive and provide information concerning changes in manifests, road and weather conditions, detours and closures, vehicle break-downs, maintenance calls, vehicle change-outs and other service needs and maintains logs relating to same.
Answer calls from senior citizens and individuals with disabilities and other special needs requesting special service; plan routes, contact drivers and assign trips to appropriate vehicle; book or cancel trips as requested by guests including DART riders
Schedule trips efficiently after reviewing computer suggestions, map coordinates, direction of travel and time constraints; insert stops, reschedule trips and transfer stops to other vehicles as appropriate; communicate with drivers via radio and instant messaging to adjust schedules. Be able to adjust to changes in computer software as updates and installations are entered into.
Contact guests to re-schedule trips, obtain additional information or notify of vehicle arrival.
Operate automated demand response reservation, scheduling and dispatch system to maximize Agency efficiency and effectiveness.
Track off routes and missed trips.
Initiate response to accidents and emergencies by contacting responding personnel and 911 as needed. Document information on appropriate forms.
Relay guest comments, driver concerns and vehicle maintenance needs to other Agency personnel as appropriate.
Monitor vehicles on the GPS maps/make sure they appear.
Prepare a weekly Will-Work list.
Enter clients and new addresses in the system.
Prepare records and reports related to specialized transportation routes, fixed routes, no-shows and other data; maintain databases and run various reports as required; maintain confidentiality of information according to Agency policies.
Prepare daily extra-board work assignments as directed.
Operate a computer, printer, two-way radio, cell phone multi-line telephone console, copier, facsimile, and label maker and other office equipment. Create forms to meet Operational needs.
Monitor multiple computer screens for scheduling and service activity.
Enter and maintain shifts and schedules of Dispatchers to ensure proper coverage.
Maintain databases and produce reports for various programs.
Maintain billing for cab companies providing services / working with People for People.
Assist in the training of new and back-up dispatchers/reservationists.
Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, and one year of general experience involving extensive public contact. One year transit or dispatch experience preferred.
Knowledge of:
Agency vehicle types and system routes.
Street names and locations within the Agency's service area.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
Operation of a computer terminal, office machines and two-way radio.
Specialized transportation services and vehicles.
Telephone and dispatching techniques.
Customer service skills.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to:
Receive and schedule guest requests for demand response and Flex Route and DART services.
Operate a two-way radio to communicate trip changes and other information to drivers.
Plan cost-effective trips to meet guest needs.
Establish rapport with guests, drivers and other Agency personnel.
Read maps and plan logical trips within time constraints.
Relay accurate information quickly and effectively using radio and telephone equipment.
Operate a computer terminal, two-way radio and office equipment.
Work patiently with and demonstrate sensitivity to persons with disabilities and seniors.
Ability to safely operate a any revenue vehicle in any weather conditions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Work and assigned day, evening or night shift, which may include weekends and holidays.
Troubleshoot minor mechanical repairs.

Working Environment: Duties are primarily performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal. Incumbents are subject to noise and multiple interruptions.
Physical Demands: Essential functions require the ability to see to read fine print, hear to receive information in person or on the telephone, speak clearly and distinctly to provide information and sit at a desk or computer for extended periods of time. Positions may be required to work varying shifts including weekends and holidays.
At least twice annually: ability to sit in a transit vehicle up to eight hours; take a mobility device and rider up or down one (1) step when necessary; use legs to apply 15 pounds of pressure for braking of transit vehicles; use arms and hands to apply 20 pounds of pressure to turn steering wheel of transit vehicles and to adjust vehicle mirrors to gain necessary line of vision to maneuver vehicle safety; bend, stoop, crouch and kneel to inspect vehicle, assist passengers and install or remove tire chains.

Retirement:
All eligible employees of Link Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.
Employees are eligible to participate in a 457 savings plan with an employer match of up to 6.2% of annual compensation plus an additional $1 per hour for eligible employees up to a maximum of 2,080 hours annually paid by Link.
Paid Leave:
Link Transit provides paid general leave for all eligible employees - accrual starts at 9 hours per pay period at time of hire. Additional leave accrues after every five years of service.
Holidays:
Link Transit eligible employees enjoy 6 paid holidays plus 4 floating holidays annually.
