What is a Full Time Gaussian Splatting job?

A Full Time Gaussian Splatting job typically refers to a position focused on developing or applying Gaussian Splatting techniques, which are used in computer graphics and computer vision for rendering 3D scenes or reconstructing neural representations. Employees in these roles often work with algorithms that use Gaussian functions to efficiently synthesize photorealistic images or accelerate rendering processes. The job may involve research, software development, or implementation of advanced graphics pipelines, often in industries such as gaming, animation, or virtual/augmented reality. Full time positions usually require a background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, as well as experience with graphics programming and machine learning.

What is the difference between Full Time Gaussian Splatting vs 3D Rendering Artist?

AspectFull Time Gaussian Splatting3D Rendering Artist
Required CredentialsKnowledge of computer graphics, programming, and rendering techniquesProficiency in 3D modeling and rendering software, often with a degree in art or design
Work EnvironmentTechnical teams, research labs, or software companiesCreative studios, advertising agencies, or entertainment industry
Industry UsagePrimarily in computer graphics research, visualization, and advanced rendering techniquesIn film, gaming, and visual effects production

Full Time Gaussian Splatting focuses on advanced rendering techniques using mathematical models, often requiring programming skills. In contrast, 3D Rendering Artists emphasize artistic skills and software proficiency to create visual content. Both roles involve rendering but differ in technical depth and industry application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Graphics Engineer specializing in Gaussian Splatting, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Graphics Engineer specializing in Gaussian Splatting, you need a strong background in computer graphics, mathematics, and programming, typically requiring a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with tools and languages such as C++, Python, OpenGL/Vulkan, and knowledge of rendering algorithms and machine learning frameworks is important. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration set standout professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate, efficient implementation of advanced graphics techniques and successful integration into real-time or offline rendering pipelines.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working full-time with Gaussian Splatting techniques, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working full-time with Gaussian Splatting techniques often encounter challenges related to computational efficiency and the integration of these methods into existing rendering pipelines. Managing large datasets while maintaining real-time performance can be demanding, particularly when optimizing for both visual quality and speed. Collaboration with graphics engineers, machine learning specialists, and artists is frequent, as solutions often require a balance between technical innovation and practical usability. Staying current with the latest research and leveraging open-source tools or community forums can help address these challenges effectively.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.
The Role
Gaussian Splatting (GS) is a 3D/4D scene reconstruction technique that enables photorealistic novel-view synthesis with low rendering complexity, making it attractive for deployment on consumer devices such as TVs, streaming sticks, phones, and laptops. Realizing this vision requires addressing several open technical challenges, such as a significant reduction in model training/encoding time and more efficient compression. As part of the Video Algorithms team during this 24-week Fall internship, you will help us investigate the potential of GS as a future streaming format and explore possible improvements, with a focus on building towards a practical system.
During the internship, you will:
  • Explore GS model compression strategies using open datasets
  • Contribute to early thinking on additional dataset needs for representative scenes.
  • Characterize trade-offs among GS model size, training time, and rendered quality, and quantify the gap relative to streaming-rate targets
  • Identify and experiment with strategies to reduce training/encoding time and/or to improve GS compression efficiency
  • Design and implement a proof-of-concept (PoC) that showcases GS-based rendering on content of interest

Who Are You?
  • Currently pursuing a PhD in a technical field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Statistics, with an expected graduation date in June 2027 or later.
  • Thrives working in complex, dynamic, and fast-moving environments.
  • Strong software development skills and feels comfortable with software engineering best practices (e.g., version control, testing, code review, etc.).
  • Successful track record in research of 3D/4D scene reconstruction, novel-view synthesis, Gaussian Splatting or NeRF, differentiable rendering, neural graphics, or 3D computer vision.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning and deep learning concepts, with hands-on experience training and evaluating ML models.
  • Able to program fluently in Python

Nice to Have:
  • Familiarity with real-time rendering and GPU programming (CUDA, WebGL, graphics pipelines).
  • Background in video compression, streaming systems, or codec standards such as HEVC and AV1.
  • Involvement in open-source multimedia or graphics projects.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and cloud computing.
