Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is vital to the success of the Community Development Department and the Building and Trades Division. The Mechanical Inspector/Plans Examiner oversees every phase of construction from planning to completion to ensure compliance with the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code and City of Reading Ordinances. The Mechanical Inspector/Plans Examiner has direct contact with both external and internal customers. The inspector must be able to interpret, explain, and implement as well as adapt to any changes made to the Codes and Ordinances.


Typical duties may include but not limited to:

  • Review and approve HVAC permit submittal documents.
  • Schedule and perform field inspections noting any violations of Codes or Ordinances as well as issue permits for the installation, removal, and alteration of HVAC system equipment.
  • Assist developers, designers, and property owners with Code-related problems, potential structure and building system hazards, and recommend abatement action.
  • Draft and mail notices of violation, citations, condemnations, demolitions, and abatement orders.
  • Maintain and submit records of field reports, inspection results, and plan reviews.
  • Support other City departments as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Requirements/ Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma/GED.
  • Must possess current certifications for Commercial Mechanical Inspector and Commercial Mechanical Plans Examiner under PA Uniform Construction Code (UCC).
  • Must possess current ICC certifications for Commercial Mechanical Inspector and Mechanical Plans Examiner
  • Must possess a City of Reading Master Mechanical license or equivalent (Master Plumber License) for a minimum of 10 years.
