Job description

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

The essential position functions listed below do not include all functions, which may be found in this position as duties, and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.

  • Enforces and interprets the Uniform Mechanical Code and all other applicable rules and regulations with affect heating, cooling and ventilation systems being installed or repaired in the City of Lansing.
  • Ensures unsafe mechanical systems are either condemned or shut-off in cases where public safety is a factor.
  • Makes regular inspections to sites which require the ability to stoop, bend and crawl through spaces in order to examine and test mechanical equipment.
  • Writes violation letters to contractor and homeowners and performs proper follow-ups as required.
  • Drives an automobile to and from inspection sites and for other purposes.

The Economic Development & Planning Department is seeking a professional Mechanical Inspector who is knowledgeable of the Michigan code standards of installing, repairing, and maintaining heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. The ideal candidate will have skill in conducting a wide range of inspections on residential, commercial and industrial properties.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years or more of experience in one (1) or more of the work classifications [Hydronic heating, cooling and process piping, HVAC, refrigeration, Fire suppression] defined in Act 407 of Public Acts of 2016 as amended.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • ICC Certification as a Mechanical Inspector preferred.

PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to walk, stand, sit, bend, twist, hear, listen, speak, and finger dexterity and visual acuity.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Mainly in the field conducting inspections with exposure to dust, dirt and a wide range of other undesirable environmental conditions.
