What are full time climate tech jobs?

Full time climate tech jobs are positions with companies or organizations that focus on developing technologies and solutions to address climate change and environmental sustainability. These roles can span a wide range of fields, including renewable energy, carbon capture, sustainable agriculture, green transportation, and climate data analysis. Employees in these jobs work on innovative projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy, and help create a more sustainable future. Full time positions typically offer standard work hours, benefits, and opportunities for career growth in the rapidly expanding climate tech sector.

What is the difference between Full Time Climate Tech vs Full Time Renewable Energy Technician?

AspectFull Time Climate TechFull Time Renewable Energy Technician
Required CredentialsRelevant degrees, certifications in climate science, environmental policyTechnical certifications in solar, wind, or energy systems
Work EnvironmentOffice, fieldwork, research labsInstallation sites, maintenance facilities, outdoor environments
Employer & Industry UsageEnvironmental organizations, government agencies, green tech companiesRenewable energy companies, solar/wind installation firms

Full Time Climate Tech roles focus on developing and implementing solutions to combat climate change, often involving policy, research, and innovation. Full Time Renewable Energy Technicians primarily install, maintain, and repair renewable energy systems like solar panels and wind turbines. While both roles support clean energy, Climate Tech positions tend to have broader scope including policy and research, whereas Renewable Energy Technicians are more technical and hands-on.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in the climate tech sector and how can these be addressed on the job?

Professionals in the climate tech sector often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving technologies, securing consistent funding for projects, and navigating complex regulatory environments. Additionally, since climate tech teams are typically multidisciplinary, effective collaboration and clear communication between engineering, policy, and business teams are essential. Staying up-to-date with industry trends, participating in cross-functional meetings, and seeking mentorship within the organization can help professionals address these challenges and contribute effectively to impactful solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Climate Tech professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Tech professional, you need a solid background in environmental science, engineering, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with data analysis tools, carbon accounting software, and renewable energy systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication help professionals drive sustainable solutions and work across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for developing and implementing technologies that address climate change and promote environmental sustainability.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer

Hybrid in the NYC OR London office

Job Type: Full-time

Tech Stack: Typescript/React, Python/Django, AWS, dbt

Don’t worry too much about having experience with the specific tech stack - we are generally looking for people with strong core engineering skills and principles. We are looking for polyglots who believe specific technologies are just tools for tackling problems.

The Company

We accelerate the deployment of climate tech solutions through industry leading data, analytics, and research. Our subscription intelligence platform gives investors, corporates, and governments the insights they need to confidently build and finance the new climate economy. We produce the industry-leading newsletter read by 60,000 climate leaders.

We launched our core product in November 2023 and it has gone from success to success. We are now looking to develop it further by adding even more innovative tools and AI-enabled solutions that empower clients to make informed decisions in the climate tech space.

The Role

Our engineering team of 7 currently consists mainly of a mixture of back-end, front-end and data engineering specialists. We’re looking for a number of full-stack engineers who are technology generalists to join our team.

You’ll be working across the front-end (React, TypeScript, CSS), the back-end (Python, Django) and doing basic infrastructure (AWS) too - implementing features across the entire stack.

We’d love it if you had some experience in using AI (we currently use OpenAI’s API) to extract data from PDFs, and/or any experience in automated data collection techniques. But this is not essential.

The first line of code of the platform was written in early 2023 so it’s a relatively young codebase written entirely by current members of the team. We are constantly iterating our product plan in order to incorporate user feedback.

This is a very hands-on, delivery-focused role in a scale-up environment. Because of this, there are always times when we need to come up with a short-term tactical solution to deliver something a little quicker than we would like. You will have a strong focus on code quality but also on flexibility and pragmatically paying off tech debt.

We believe in thorough automated testing - every PR must have the appropriate E2E and unit tests. We own and have responsibility for the entire platform - its deployment and its reliability - so we also completely control our own CI and CD processes.

The team is an autonomous and empowered multi-disciplinary one. Our team is currently broken down into three sub-teams and consists of engineers, product managers and designers.

Must Haves

  • Good communication skills - we are constantly communicating in very technical language to each other one minute; semi-technical language to (for e.g) the product manager the next; and in layman’s terms to non-technical people the next.
  • Strong core engineering skills - we are generally looking for strong engineers, not necessarily people with a lot of (or any!) experience in our specific tech stack.
  • Kindness - we, as a team and as a company, believe in being kind over being nice. We are constantly giving and receiving constructive feedback and we are always trying to be empathetic. We’re all growing together.

Our Offer

  • Opportunity to work, learn, and make an impact at a fast-growing climate tech startup
  • Generous stock options
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays
