Description
Are you seeking a challenging yet rewarding position that allows you to utilize your customer service and driving skills? If so, the Department of Public Transportation's Transit Bus Operator positions may be the right opportunity for you!
The Public Transportation Department is seeking to fill both full-time, benefits-eligible and part-time (no benefits) Transit Bus Operator positions. The roles have a preferred hiring rate of $19.54 per hour. Prior experience and a CDL is not required at the time of hire for this position as paid on-the-job training will be provided.
As a Transit Bus Operator, you will:
  • Drive a transit bus;
  • Pick up and deliver passengers;
  • Collect fares;
  • Operate a bus on a designated route for a daily schedule;
  • Operate a two-way radio and report unusual traffic conditions, passenger emergencies, or other problems;
  • Operate a mobility device lift and secure mobility devices;
  • Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory safety regulations for transit operations to ensure passenger safety.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and some experience operating buses or similar equipment. Candidates without previous experience operating buses or similar equipment are encouraged to apply as paid on-the-job training will be provided.
  • Valid driver's license is required at the time of application. Possession of or the ability to acquire an appropriate CDL valid in the Commonwealth of VA is required by the end of the paid, on-the-job classroom training for this position, or as deemed appropriate by the Department.
  • Availability Requirements:
    • Full-Time Positions: A minimum of 5 days per week Mondays - Saturdays, primarily for afternoon/evening shifts. Opportunities for additional shifts may be available.
    • Part-Time Positions: A minimum of 18 hours per week. Opportunities for additional shifts may be available.
Successful applicants for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
  • DMV record check;
  • FTA drug screen;
  • FTA physical; and
  • Criminal background check.
This position is subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
