Why This Role Matters: This is a senior-level position based in the NYC area within SWA's Building Operations, Decarbonization & Efficiency (BODE) team. In this role, you will drive sustainable value creation through innovative energy solutions for our clients with a focus on meeting local carbon emission mandates. By conducting comprehensive energy audits, decarbonization feasibility studies, and developing strategic retrofit solutions, you'll deliver measurable reductions in energy costs and carbon emissions. You'll advance our organizational capabilities through technical approaches to energy management, positioning SWA as leaders in sustainable building practices.
In addition, you will support commissioning (Cx) efforts across projects, from design and submittal reviews through functional testing of MEP systems, to verify that energy-related systems perform efficiently, reliably, and maintain occupant comfort.
The proposed annual salary range for this position is $85,000 - $130,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience

  • Support commissioning and retro-commissioning projects and decarbonization assessments for multifamily, mixed-use, commercial, institutional, cultural/art center, and community buildings.
  • Assist in development of commissioning plans and testing procedures, create technical reports and presentations for both new and existing buildings.
  • Perform functional testing of central plant equipment, controls, terminal units, and other energy-related building systems to verify operational performance and identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint by conducting decarbonization feasibility studies, advanced energy audits and assessments, retrofit implementation, and retro-commissioning solutions for existing buildings.
  • Drive innovation and sustainability through technical solutions that address complex environmental challenges.
  • Improve ROI on energy investments by evaluating building equipment retrofits and upgrades, with emphasis on electrification and heat pump technologies to optimize energy efficiency.
  • Optimize building performance by evaluating construction documents and recommending enhancements to indoor air quality, energy efficiency, constructability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Contribute to the growth and success of the team by actively supporting and training junior colleagues.
  • Enhance industry expertise and performance by delivering comprehensive technical training programs for building professionals.

Who You Are:
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering field or related science degree.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience working with HVAC systems in large multi-family or commercial buildings.
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in emerging high-performance technologies.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.

What You Bring:
  • Proven experience with commissioning (Cx), retro-commissioning (RCx), decarbonization planning, and advanced energy audits.
  • Hands-on experience conducting field inspections and performance testing on HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems in large multi-family or commercial buildings.
  • Ability to execute comprehensive energy assessments, feasibility studies, and calculations to predict, analyze, and optimize building energy consumption patterns.
  • Success leading and delivering multiple small to medium-sized projects through stakeholder engagement, client communication, and team coordination.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and MS Office Suite for data analysis and technical reporting.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to type, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb stairs, use elevators and exterior construction hoists, and may be exposed to cold and hot interior and exterior temperatures for extended periods of time (when in the field).
Travel Requirements: Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 10%). Frequent local field visits in the NYC Metro area will be necessary (approximately 40-50%). Boston-based candidates: Monthly travel to NYC required, plus additional project-based trips as needed.
Working Environment: Recent hires may be required to work in-office five days per week during onboarding, with potential for a flexible schedule after necessary training and supervisor approval; all team members are expected in the office at least three days per week, with flexibility based on job duties and site work.
