What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is a Full Stack Engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer

Job description

Job Summary:
Novir is an emerging diagnostic biotechnology company with an unmatched team of professionals delivering innovative testing solutions. They are seeking a Technical Lead / Full Stack Engineer to own the technology end-to-end, design scalable systems, and partner closely with leadership to translate business needs into technical solutions.
Responsibilities:
• Own the technical vision and architecture across all Novir platforms, including core applications, integrations, and infrastructure
• Act as a player-coach: write production code while guiding and leveling up other engineers and contributors
• Leverage AI/agentic development tools to dramatically improve speed, efficiency, and code quality
• Design and build scalable, secure APIs and systems that integrate with internal tools and third-party platforms
• Partner closely with product, operations, and leadership to prioritize and execute against the roadmap
• Translate ambiguous business needs into clean, pragmatic technical solutions
• Lead development of internal tools including tracking systems, inventory systems, and operational platforms
• Establish best practices across code quality, deployment, CI/CD, and system reliability
• Evaluate and implement new technologies that create leverage and long-term advantages
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript / TypeScript across the stack
• Experience with Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (React preferred)
• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS – EC2, RDS, etc.)
• Experience with Docker, distributed systems, and backend services (Redis, nginx, etc.)
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub, CircleCI, CodeDeploy)
• Strong experience designing and building APIs and system integrations
• Comfort working across the full stack: frontend, backend, and infrastructure
• 6+ years of engineering experience, with increasing ownership over systems and architecture
• Ability to operate as both architect and hands-on engineer
• A builder’s mindset—someone who ships, iterates, and takes ownership
• Experience using (or strong interest in using) AI-assisted / agentic coding tools to accelerate development
• Strong product intuition and ability to work directly with stakeholders and customers
• Comfort operating in an ambiguous, fast-moving startup environment
• Track record of building and scaling systems from the ground up
Preferred:
• Prior experience in a lead, staff, or founding engineer role strongly preferred
• Experience with patient tracking systems, EMRs/EHRs, lab integrations (HL7, FHIR, SFTP, API), and inventory logistics
Company:
Novir is an emerging diagnostic biotechnology company with an unmatched team of professionals and trusted partners delivering smart. Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Milwaukee, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
