What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

While both roles require strong web development skills, a Full Stack Engineer handles both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web development. A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

What is a Full Stack Engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Job description

Forward Deployed Full Stack Engineer Location: Hybrid ~3x/wk | Groton, CT or Suitland, MD
Clearance: Active U.S. Secret Clearance Required Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits The Company & Mission: Join a mission-driven defense technology company at the forefront of maritime domain awareness and national security innovation. This team is building next-generation platforms that combine artificial intelligence, advanced sensor systems, and real-time data processing to support critical U.S. defense operations. The organization operates with a flat structure, empowering engineers to work directly with leadership and take full ownership of high-impact systems. You’ll collaborate across hardware, software, and mission teams to deliver solutions that are actively deployed in operational environments. This is an opportunity to work on real-world systems that directly impact warfighter capabilities — including AI-powered platforms integrated with sonar data and edge-deployed sensor networks. What This Role is All About: As a Forward Deployed Full Stack Engineer, you will work directly with end users and mission stakeholders in operational environments. This is a highly hands-on role combining software engineering, system integration, and field problem-solving. You will own systems end-to-end and ensure they perform reliably in mission-critical conditions. You will build and deploy full-stack applications, integrate real-time and batch data pipelines, and deliver solutions that operate effectively in real-world environments. This is not a traditional software role — you will be expected to operate close to the mission, solve real-world problems quickly, and take full ownership of outcomes. What You’ll Be Doing: • Build and maintain full-stack application components, including user-facing interfaces and backend services
• Develop responsive, high-performance UIs using modern frameworks (React, Next.js, TypeScript)
• Implement and integrate real-time data feeds using technologies such as WebGPU
• Design and optimize data models using PostgreSQL and Apache Iceberg
• Modify and maintain real-time data pipelines using MQTT and Redpanda
• Build and support batch/offline data pipelines using Dagster
• Integrate machine learning models and algorithms into production applications
• Collaborate directly with customers and mission stakeholders to solve real-world operational challenges
• Improve local development environments and CI/CD pipelines using modern tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions)
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in live deployment environments What You Bring: • Strong full-stack engineering experience across frontend and backend systems
• Expertise in TypeScript and modern frontend development (React, Next.js)
• Experience building APIs using Node.js, GraphQL, and/or REST
• Proficiency with SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL)
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Working knowledge of Python
• Experience building and maintaining production-grade systems with a focus on performance and reliability
• Ability to operate in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with high ownership Bonus Points: • Experience working with IoT devices, sensors, or edge systems
• Background in digital signal processing (DSP)
• Experience with geospatial systems or GIS
• Familiarity working within monorepos
• Prior experience in defense, national security, or mission-critical environments Benefits: • Equity participation
• 401(k) retirement plan
• Unlimited paid time off (PTO)
• Paid parental leave
• Paid holidays
• Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
• Short- and long-term disability coverage
