What is a full stack developer contract?

A Full Stack Developer Contract refers to a temporary or project-based employment arrangement where a developer is responsible for both front-end and back-end aspects of web or software development. Full stack developers are skilled in multiple technologies, enabling them to handle databases, servers, systems engineering, and client-facing interfaces. Contract roles often provide flexibility for both the employer and the developer, and can range from short-term projects to longer engagements. These positions are typically filled by experienced professionals who can quickly adapt to different technologies and project needs.

What are some common challenges full stack developers face when working on contract projects?

As a contract Full Stack Developer, you may encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new codebases, tools, and team workflows, since contract roles often require rapid onboarding. Balancing front-end and back-end tasks within tight deadlines can be demanding, especially when project requirements change or are not clearly defined. Additionally, frequent communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential to ensure alignment and successful project delivery. Staying organized and proactive in managing your workload will help you handle these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer on contract, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer on contract, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., JavaScript, HTML/CSS, frameworks like React or Angular) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java, databases) development, typically demonstrated through a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and sometimes certifications in specific technologies is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver results within tight deadlines. These abilities ensure you can independently manage diverse project requirements and consistently deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions for clients.

Job description

Lynker, a Federal Government Contractor, is seeking to fill a full-time position for a Senior Full Stack Developer, to support a long term contract with the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Space Weather refers to variations in the space environment between the sun and Earth that can affect technologies in space and on Earth. Space weather is primarily driven by solar storm phenomena that include coronal mass ejections, solar flares, solar particle events and solar wind. These phenomena that are directed toward Earth are potential drivers of space weather events that can disrupt communications, satellite and airline operations, navigation and surveying systems, as well as electric power grids across large geographic regions on Earth. Space weather is a global issue and an understanding of solar storm phenomena is an important component to SWPC’s success at developing accurate space weather forecasts (event onset, location, duration, and magnitude).

The Senior Full Stack Developer supports SWPC by implementing intuitive, accessible, and responsive web interfaces that communicate critical space weather information. This position is a mid level to senior opportunity, ideal for individuals who want to contribute to the modernization of SWPC's web presence and Testbed applications. Working closely with the Web and Testbed teams as well as other developers in the Technology Division, the developer will translate scientific and operational requirements into clean, user-centered designs, and support front-end implementation using contemporary web technologies.

The Senior Full Stack Developer's selected will be responsible for the following:

Design user-friendly, responsive interfaces for SWPC’s web applications and product delivery systems.  Assist in the development of wireframes, mockups, and prototypes based on stakeholder input and usability goals.

Front-End Development

  • Modernize legacy applications using modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, and Svelte
  • Build user-friendly, data-rich interfaces with strong attention to detail and user experience
  • Integrate generative AI and machine learning features to support client-facing scheduling and decision-making tools

Back-End & Infrastructure

  • Design and modernize back-end systems using Java, Python, and Node.js
  • Develop RESTful APIs using Python and the Django framework
  • Work with relational and NoSQL databases including Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB
  • Build and maintain ETL pipelines and services using Prefect
  • Deploy applications to dedicated servers using Docker
  • Manage and evolve software architecture to improve efficiency, scalability, and performance

Project & Team Leadership

  • Organize and manage new projects, ensuring scope, budget, and deadlines are met throughout the project lifecycle
  • Lead a team of developers, providing technical direction and code/QA review
  • Meet regularly with clients and stakeholders to maintain open communication and align on project goals
  • Assess stakeholder needs and translate them into actionable requirements using Agile/Scrum methodology

Quality Assurance & Testing

  • Test and QA other developers' work as part of the standard development process
  • Write automated test scripts using Selenium and Playwright to validate new deployments and prevent regressions
  • Contribute to debugging and continuous improvement of application architecture

Product & Engagement Initiatives

  • Design and build demo applications and performance-based campaigns to showcase product capabilities

The Ideal Senior Full Stack Developer will have the following:

At least a Master’s degree in atmospheric science, space physics, geophysics, engineering, computer science, graphic design, human-computer interaction, or mathematics from an accredited institution and at least 8 years of experience in related areas.

  • Proven experience as a Full-Stack Developer, with prior experience in a senior or lead capacity
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript frameworks (Vue, React, Svelte)
  • Solid back-end development experience with Java, Python, and Node.js (Django experience a plus)
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
  • Hands-on experience with Docker for deployment
  • Experience with automated testing tools such as Selenium and Playwright
  • Familiarity with ETL processes and tools such as Prefect
  • Experience integrating AI/ML features into production applications
  • Strong project management skills, with Agile/Scrum experience
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a development team

Desired skills:

  • Exposure to Drupal or similar CMS platforms, especially in theming or content structuring.
  • Basic understanding of user research methods such as surveys, user interviews, or A/B testing.
  • Interest or coursework in space science, atmospheric physics, or scientific visualization.
  • Familiarity with web API integration and visualizing scientific data in browser-based environments.
  • Experience with Git or other version control systems.
  • Ability to communicate design intent and usability rationale effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
