How much do full stack automation engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 2, 2026, the average yearly pay for full stack automation engineer in the United States is $134,771.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $158,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Full Stack Automation Engineers face when integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines?

Full Stack Automation Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between various testing frameworks and CI/CD tools, maintaining test reliability as the codebase grows, and managing flaky tests that can disrupt deployment workflows. Collaborating closely with development and DevOps teams is crucial for troubleshooting integration issues and keeping pipelines efficient. Staying up-to-date with evolving tools and best practices also helps in addressing these challenges proactively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Automation Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript, or Java), a solid understanding of both front-end and back-end development, and experience with automation frameworks. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, Jenkins, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., ISTQB, AWS Certified Developer), is highly beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying automation opportunities and collaborating across teams. These abilities ensure efficient development, robust automation solutions, and streamlined deployment processes, directly impacting product quality and delivery speed.

What is the difference between Full Stack Automation Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectFull Stack Automation EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires programming, scripting, and automation certifications or experienceRequires programming skills, often a degree in computer science or related field
Work EnvironmentWorks on automating testing, deployment, and integration processes across full stack applicationsDevelops software applications, features, and systems
Industry UsageCommon in DevOps, QA, and continuous integration teamsWidely used across software development companies and tech industries

The Full Stack Automation Engineer focuses on automating the entire software development lifecycle, including testing and deployment, often requiring scripting and automation tools. In contrast, a Software Developer primarily designs and builds software applications. While both roles require programming skills, the Automation Engineer emphasizes automation processes across the full stack, making their roles complementary but distinct.

What is a Full Stack Automation Engineer?

A Full Stack Automation Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated solutions across both front-end and back-end systems. They have expertise in programming, automation frameworks, and deployment tools, allowing them to streamline software development, testing, and operational processes. Their responsibilities often include automating workflows, integrating various technology stacks, and ensuring that applications run efficiently and reliably. This role requires knowledge of multiple programming languages, cloud platforms, and testing methodologies. Full Stack Automation Engineers play a key role in improving productivity and reducing manual intervention in software projects.

Job description

Location: Union Square, New York City

Work Model: In-Office, 5 Days/Week

Industry: AI Infrastructure / Data Infrastructure / SaaS

Compensation: $190,000โ€“$215,000 base salary + meaningful early-stage equity (target total compensation up to ~$250Kโ€“$260K)

About the Company

Our partner is a rapidly growing, venture-backed AI infrastructure startup building the technology that enables software companies to migrate customer data between complex systems quickly and reliably. Their platform automates one of the most difficult problems in enterprise software adoptionโ€”moving and transforming data across CRMs, ERPs, and other systems of recordโ€”allowing customers to onboard in hours instead of weeks.

The company has experienced exceptional growth, increasing revenue nearly 4x in the first half of the year, and is now scaling both its engineering and go-to-market teams. Their product sits at the intersection of AI, data infrastructure, and workflow automation, solving technically challenging problems for a growing customer base.

The Opportunity

Our partner is hiring Senior Full Stack Engineers to help build the next generation of their product. This is a backend-heavy product engineering role focused on developing customer-facing features, building scalable data movement systems, and solving complex engineering problems that directly impact customers.

This isn't an environment where engineers simply work through tickets. The team is looking for builders who enjoy shaping product direction, collaborating closely with customers, and using AI as a core part of their development workflow. You'll work alongside experienced engineers in a highly collaborative environment where ownership, initiative, and product thinking are expected from day one.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain full-stack product features with an emphasis on backend systems
  • Develop scalable data movement pipelines and workflow automation capabilities
  • Partner with product, engineering, and occasionally customers to solve real-world technical challenges
  • Contribute to product direction by providing thoughtful technical feedback and implementation ideas
  • Build AI-enabled product capabilities and incorporate modern AI tooling into daily development workflows
  • Write clean, maintainable TypeScript code across frontend and backend services
  • Help improve platform performance, reliability, and developer experience
Requirements
  • 5โ€“7+ years of professional software engineering experience (4 years minimum considered)
  • Strong experience building full-stack applications using TypeScript and React
  • Experience developing backend systems, APIs, and data-intensive applications
  • Product-minded engineer who enjoys solving customer problemsโ€”not just implementing requirements
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced startup environments with significant ownership
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools within your engineering workflow
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate across product and engineering teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ETL, data movement, workflow orchestration, or pipeline development
  • Experience with browser automation, web scraping, or automation tooling
  • Experience working with AI agents or modern LLM frameworks
  • Familiarity with AWS, Postgres, or Temporal
