Backstage is seeking a Frontend Engineering Manager to lead and grow our frontend web team. This role is a mix of people leadership, technical stewardship, and cross-functional collaboration. You'll manage and mentor a team of frontend engineers while partnering closely with product, design, and engineering leadership to deliver high-impact, user-focused web experiences.
Our frontend team is part of Backstage's larger product and engineering organization, which includes frontend, backend, iOS, devops, designers, product managers, data analysts, and quality assurance resources. We value curiosity, trust, and impact, and we foster a culture of constant learning, autonomy, and collaboration.
Our teams operate in a modified Kanban process focused on delivering incremental value to customers. Engineers drive estimates, teams release multiple times per day, and quality is upheld through robust QA and code review practices. As a manager, you'll support this culture by enabling teams to do their best work rather than dictating how that work gets done. What You'll Do
  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of frontend engineers across multiple experience levels, including senior engineers and tech leads

  • Manage performance, career development, goal-setting, and regular feedback for direct reports

  • Partner with product managers, designers, and technical leads to plan, scope, and deliver frontend initiatives aligned with business goals

  • Guide frontend architecture and technical direction, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and strong developer experience

  • Balance hands-on technical guidance with people leadership (this is not primarily an individual contributor role)

  • Support engineers in designing and delivering complex web applications using modern frontend technologies

  • Foster a culture of autonomy, ownership, and continuous improvement

  • Ensure frontend best practices around accessibility, performance, testing, and code quality

  • Coordinate with backend, mobile, and platform teams to deliver cohesive, end-to-end user experiences

  • Help evolve team processes, workflows, and tooling to support frequent, high-quality releases

  • Translate company and department goals into clear, actionable priorities for the frontend team

What We're Looking For From You
  • Proven experience managing and mentoring a team of engineers

  • Strong background in modern frontend development, with deep familiarity in React and TypeScript

  • Experience guiding architectural decisions in large or mature frontend codebases

  • Ability to balance technical depth with people leadership and cross-functional collaboration

  • Strong project and delivery management skills; comfortable working in Agile environments

  • Excellent communication skills; able to clearly articulate technical and non-technical concepts to diverse audiences

  • Experience supporting teams that release frequently and iterate on live products

  • Thoughtful leadership style grounded in trust, autonomy, and accountability

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving product environment

  • Familiarity with payments workflows, complex forms, or integrations (e.g., Stripe) is a plus

  • Familiarity with Python and/or Django is a plus

Special Work Conditions
  • Sedentary - Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Some positions may entail exerting up to 15 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or pull.

  • This is a hybrid role, with in-person presence at the New York office required a few times per month.
