The Position

Faculty members serve multiple roles as teachers, mentors, colleagues, and scholars. Full-time faculty are expected not only to excel in classroom instruction but also to fulfill various responsibilities as active members of the college community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach a standard full-time course load as defined by the college (may be a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses). The teaching load is 8 units, where lecture sections are one unit and lab sections range from 0.5 to 1 unit.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality courses in the faculty member’s area(s) of expertise
  • Use inclusive, effective, engaging, and current pedagogical practices
  • Fairly assess student learning and provide timely feedback
  • Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA and college regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
  • Hold regular office hours to provide student support

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely-related field is preferred
  • Master’s Degree or higher with relevant professional experience is required
  • Evidence of potential for highly effective classroom teaching is required
  • A successful candidate must have a strong interest in teaching a wide range of undergraduate computer science and data science courses in a liberal arts setting, in mentoring a variety of experiential learning opportunities, and in supporting efforts to expand the offerings in Computer Science and Data Science. Evidence of potential for highly effective classroom teaching is required.

Roanoke College invites applications for a visiting position in Computer Science, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, starting in August 2026. We seek a candidate with energetic vision, creative thought, and collaborative spirit. We are eager to expand our expertise into Applied Computer Science, cybersecurity, and large language models.

A successful candidate must have a strong interest in teaching a wide range of undergraduate computer science and data science courses in a liberal arts setting, in mentoring a variety of experiential learning opportunities, and in supporting efforts to expand the offerings in Computer Science and Data Science. Evidence of potential for highly effective classroom teaching is required. The teaching load is 8 units, where lecture sections are one unit and lab sections range from 0.5 to 1 unit. The anticipated courses for the 2026-2027 academic year include

· CPSC 120 – Programming (lecture and lab)

· CPSC 250 – Data Structures and Algorithms (lecture and lab)

· CPSC 311 – Machine Learning

· CPSC 370 – Data Mining

· CPSC 450 – Theory of Computation

· DATA 170 – Exploring Data.
