Job description

Our CNC Engineer & Operator plays a critical role in translating custom millwork designs into precise, efficient, and repeatable CNC programs while also operating CNC equipment on the shop floor. This position bridges engineering, production, and craftsmanship—ensuring projects are manufactured accurately, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

This role requires strong experience with Mozaik software, CNC programming, and hands-on machine operation within a custom woodworking or millwork environment.

From concept through production, the Millwork Engineer is responsible for developing precise shop drawings, coordinating technical requirements, and supporting the shop floor to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and exceptional craftsmanship. This role is essential to maintaining Detroit Woodworking’s standards for quality, constructability, and continuous improvement.

 Key Responsibilities

    CNC Machine Operation

    • Set up, operate, and monitor CNC routers and related equipment.
    • Load materials, set tooling, establish work offsets, and verify programs prior to production runs.
    • Perform test cuts and first-article inspections to ensure accuracy and quality.
    • Troubleshoot machining issues, tool wear, and material inconsistencies.
    • Maintain clean, organized, and safe CNC work areas.

    CNC Engineering & Programming 

    • Develop, maintain, and optimize CNC programs using Mozaik for custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, and furniture.
    • Interpret architectural drawings, shop drawings, and design intent to create accurate machining strategies.
    • Build and maintain Mozaik libraries, part templates, materials, tooling, and machining macros.
    • Optimize nesting, toolpaths, and cut strategies to improve efficiency, material yield, and cycle times.
    • Collaborate with project managers, designers, and shop leadership to resolve constructability or production challenges.
    • Prepare CNC-ready files that align with shop standards and Lean manufacturing processes.

    Quality, Process & Continuous Improvement

    • Ensure all CNC-produced components meet design intent, tolerances, and finish requirements.
    • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, reduce waste, and standardize best practices.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to CNC production and engineering efficiency.
    • Assist in training apprentices or junior team members on Mozaik and CNC operations as needed.
    • Maintain a clean workspace. Free of debris and taking care of cut offs.

    • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD required; Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, or similar preferred).
    • Proven experience programming and operating CNC routers in a woodworking or millwork environment.

    • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and interior design drawings.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
