Job description

POSITION 27S16 TITLE:ย  Aide/Autism Mentor (long-term, temporary)

LOCATION:ย  Cameron High

EMPLOYMENT TERM:ย ย ย ย  Estimated contract:ย  188 days but flexible based on employee LOA, typically eight hours per day, but flexible as needed by bus run or student needs and school starting time.ย  Anticipated start date of August 31, 2026.

BID PERIOD:ย August 13-16, 2026, 4 pm.ย  If necessary, interviews will be arranged after bid period closes.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:ย ย ย ย ย ย 

The Aide employed for the purpose of working within the special education program will be required to ride the bus assisting students with their needs in boarding, riding, and disembarking from the bus as well as assisting the teacher with classroom instruction, assisting children with toileting needs, lifting physically handicapped children as needed and assisting in the administration of emergency first aid care.ย  The aide will be required to be trained in and to follow physician's instructions regarding special medical care required for all children.ย  The aide will provide approved specialized health care procedures (catheterization, suctioning of tracheostomy, nasogastric tube feeding or gastrostomy tube feeding and distributing medication).ย  Such procedures shall be delegated by the certified school nurse.ย The school nurse shall provide for training, retraining and supervision, and upon completion certify satisfactory level of competence before school employees perform certain health care procedures.ย  Various duties as assigned by the principal and/or county office director.

Bus duty and/or bus run as assigned by county/school administration including assisting in boarding, riding, and disembarking from school busses.ย  Initial/annual special needs bus training must be passed and renewed as a condition of employment.ย 

  • Implement established rules, instructions, and preventive discipline strategies to support positive student functioning.
  • Attend first aid and other requiredย trainingsย toย maintainย certifications and compliance requirements.
  • Maintainย ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information and follow county personnel policies and procedures.
  • Assistย with emergency management and evacuation procedures.
  • Administer, score, and record achievement and assessments as recommended for individual students.
  • Read to students andย participateย in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Maintainย a neat, orderly, and safe environment conducive to learning andย assistย with supervision in multiple settings (cafeteria, field trips, drills, playground, etc.).
  • Helpย maintainย an up-to-date classroom inventory and perform clerical duties for classroom purposes.
  • Facilitate exercises prescribed by physical, occupational, and/or speech therapists as directed.
  • Secure students in car seats, seat belts, harnesses, etc., during transportation; secure wheelchairs safely for transport.
  • Modifyย materials and instructional activities as directed by the teacher and in alignment with IEPs.
  • Assistย with preparing snacks for students as directed by the teacher.
  • Provide support to students in library, art, music, physical education, recess, lunch, and other settings as assigned.
  • Assistย with escorting students to and from the bus and throughout the school; assist identified students in transit to and from school and residence as assigned.
  • Set up,ย operate, andย maintainย equipment for instruction; help prepare instructional materials.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction under the supervision of a teacher and provide students with individualized attention.
  • Complete required documentation, including daily logs and Medicaid forms as applicable.
  • Provide care and supervision of student(s) diagnosed with autism or other special education needs.
  • Accompanyย student(s) to classes andย provide assistance toย teachers as needed.
  • Support instructional activities under direction of the teacher, providing individual and small group student support
  • Assist in preparing and organizing instructional materials
  • Assist with student supervision in classroom and school settings to maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment
  • Support student academic, behavioral, and social development
  • Assist students with personal care and daily living needs as required, including toileting
  • Assist with transitions, lunch duty, playground supervision, and in other locations as needed
  • Communicate effectively with staff regarding student needs while maintaining confidentiality and following all policies and procedures
  • Bus duty and/or bus run as assigned by county/school administration including assisting in boarding and disembarking from school busses
  • Perform first aid on students/staff as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 

The aide employed for the purpose of autism mentor must possess the qualifications as outlined by the West Virginia Department of Education for Autism Mentor or if successful applicant does not possess the qualifications, he/she must be willing to obtain the Autism Mentor certification within two years.ย  Must have high school diploma or equivalent.ย Yearly CPI, CPR/AED, and Food handler's training (among others) is required as a condition of employment.

The applicant will provide demonstrable competencies in reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics.ย  He/She will demonstrate verbal and written expression as well as the ability to follow both oral and written instructions.ย  The aide will be required to have medical training necessary to follow a physician's instructions using equipment designed for physically handicapped children.ย  The aide will be required to demonstrate knowledge of first aid.ย  The aide must be physically capable of lifting physically handicapped children in need of assistance.ย  The aide will be required to have medical training necessary to follow the nurse's instruction regarding specialized health procedures.ย  This means, but is not limited to, catheterization, suctioning of tracheostomy, nasogastric tube feeding or gastrostomy tube feeding.ย  Any aide who will be involved with the preparation or serving of foods will be required to secure a food handler's permit from the Marshall County Health Department.ย 

The applicant must be able to independently lift and toilet children 100 - 150 pounds and over.

The applicant will also demonstrate the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the job description, with or without reasonable accommodation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.ย While performing the duties of this job, the employee isย frequentlyย required to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, and see.ย The employee must be able to move chairs or desks on a daily basis.ย The employee may occasionally lend assistance lifting or restraining students through non-violent crisis interventions using approved physical management techniques to protect self and other from student aggression (e.g., blocking strikes/bites, redirecting, or safely restraining a student).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors but may also include outdoor activities, hallways, cafeterias, gyms, auditoriums, buses, and other school-related locations, sometimes under varying weather and temperature conditions.ย  The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderate to occasionally loud and may include student conversations, instructional activities, announcements, alarms, and outdoor or large-group settings.ย  The work environment may involve frequent movement of students, visual and auditory monitoring, exposure to communicable illnesses, and occasional exposure to emotionally or physically challenging student behaviors consistent within a school setting.ย  Travelling as a passenger on a school bus may be necessary.
