What does a freight trader do?

A freight trader buys and sells transportation capacity, such as truck, rail, or shipping services, to optimize logistics and profit. They analyze market trends, negotiate rates, and manage relationships with carriers and clients to ensure efficient freight movement.

What are the main challenges Freight Traders face in balancing client needs with market fluctuations?

Freight Traders often navigate rapidly changing market conditions, including volatile shipping rates and unpredictable global events, while striving to meet client demands for timely and cost-effective transportation solutions. This requires strong analytical skills to interpret market data and make quick decisions, as well as excellent communication to manage client expectations. Building strong relationships with shipping partners and staying informed about global trade trends are crucial for success in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freight Trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freight Trader, you need strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of global shipping markets, and usually a degree in business, finance, logistics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms, shipping databases, and risk management tools—as well as familiarity with Incoterms and contract negotiation—is typical. Excellent communication, negotiation abilities, and quick decision-making are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are vital for effectively managing market volatility, securing profitable deals, and building lasting client relationships in the fast-paced freight industry.

Strong negotiation skills and industry knowledge are important for higher earnings in this role.

What jobs make $3,000 a day?

Freight traders can potentially earn $3,000 a day through successful buying and selling of freight contracts, especially when dealing with high-value shipments or large volumes. Earnings depend on market conditions, experience, and negotiation skills, often requiring strong knowledge of logistics, finance, and risk management. Such high daily income is typically associated with experienced traders in freight brokerage or commodities trading environments.

How to get hired as a freight broker?

To get hired as a freight broker, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, and should obtain a freight broker license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Building industry knowledge, developing strong communication and negotiation skills, and gaining experience in logistics or transportation can improve job prospects. Job Description:

What's the role

This is an opportunity to join Shell's Global Products Freight Trading team in a fast-paced physical and paper freight trading environment.

As a Freight Trader, you will support and execute freight trading activity across products markets, working closely with global trading desks, analysts, shipowners, brokers and internal control functions to deliver competitive freight outcomes, manage exposure and contribute to P&L delivery. The role is designed for a commercially capable trader who can operate with increasing autonomy, take accountability for defined positions and decisions, and make a significant contribution to the global trading book.

What you'll be doing

  • Execute and optimise physical freight activity, including spot fixtures and selected term or position-taking opportunities, in line with book strategy, delegated authority and risk appetite
  • Manage defined physical and paper freight exposures, using paper freight instruments to hedge, optimise or manage risk where appropriate
  • Work with Products trading desks to identify commercially attractive logistics solutions and support end-to-end value across product flows
  • Use freight market intelligence, vessel supply/demand signals, internal analytics and voyage economics to identify tactical opportunities and trade optimization
  • Maintain strong, professional relationships with shipowners, brokers, charterers and internal stakeholders across different regions and time zones
  • Ensure timely and accurate capture of trades, exposures and operational details in Shell systems of record, maintaining strong compliance with internal controls, finance, credit and risk requirements
  • Contribute to daily trading discussions, market outlooks and portfolio reviews by bringing clear views on freight fundamentals, pricing, risks and opportunities
  • Collaborate with Freight Analysts and other commercial colleagues to improve models, challenge assumptions and translate insight into trading decisions

What you bring

  • The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience required
  • At least 5 years' relevant experience in freight trading, shipping markets, chartering, commodity trading or a closely related commercial role. Candidates are likely to have built meaningful market exposure rather than being at an entry-level training stage
  • Sound understanding of freight market fundamentals, vessel classes, product flows, voyage economics, counterparty dynamics and the operational realities of loading, discharging and managing freight movements
  • Working knowledge of risk management across physical and paper freight markets, including awareness of FFA or other paper instruments used for hedging and exposure management
  • Strong numerical capability, commercial judgement and comfort using data, analytics tools, vessel-tracking information and freight models to support decisions
  • Clear evidence of operating effectively under pressure, managing multiple priorities and making timely recommendations in a dynamic trading environment
  • Good communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills with the ability to work across cultures, functions and time zones
  • High standards of integrity, control discipline and compliance awareness, with the ability to work transparently with Finance, Compliance, Credit and Risk teams
  • A self-starting, team-oriented mindset with the confidence to challenge constructively, learn quickly and contribute to a high-performance trading culture
