Position Summary
As part of the Commercial Marine team, you will play a crucial role being part of a global freight team, segmented by commodity type with region specific responsibilities. The Charterer role demands a keen ability to navigate and interpret complex market structure. The primary challenge lies in adaptability to changing market dynamics, making forward freight calls, strategizing fleet positioning and balance in support Marathon's evolving refining and marketing needs. This requires someone who is able to work in a fast-paced trading-floor environment, seamlessly collaborating with internal stakeholders. Effective communication and collaboration with the local and global teams are essential to ensure timely and strategic decision-making in a highly competitive freight market. This position is initially focused on coverage of the Crude/DPP and LPG maritime needs, but may evolve over time.
Occasional domestic and/or international travel to meet clients and attend shipping conferences is required (approximately one to four times per year).
Key Responsibilities
  • Negotiate spot charters; market time charter fleet, under guidance, focusing on achieving competitive pricing and favorable terms.

  • Track and report on market trends, supply chain issues, and geopolitical factors that may impact product availability and pricing.

  • Manage voyage execution and ensure safe and efficient delivery. Support relationship management by maintaining regular communication with owners, charterers, and brokers.

  • Follow established trading strategies and provide input to help optimize profitability.

  • Coordinate and execute internal waterborne cargo requirements, confirm dates and logistic requirements, and compliance with industry and voyage related regulations.

  • Perform tasks related to asset management, such as handling documentation, compliance, demurrage, and vessel vetting. Handle routine tasks related to physical asset management, including basic cash tracking; development of low to medium complex freight estimates to internal trading teams.

  • Compile and submit reports on trading activities, performance metrics, and market updates for review by internal stakeholders.

  • Work with regional teams to assist in implementing supply and sourcing plans.

Education and Experience
Chartering Specialist
  • Bachelor's Degree required.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in analytics, marine operations, trading or marketing including profit/loss responsibility for product trading, contract negotiation and scheduling.

Senior Chartering Specialist
  • Bachelor's Degree required.

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in analytics, marine operations, trading or marketing including profit/loss responsibility for product trading, contract negotiation and scheduling.
