What is a freelance web developer?

A freelance web developer is an independent professional who designs, builds, and maintains websites for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. They often work with a range of clients, including businesses, organizations, and individuals, offering services such as website creation, updates, troubleshooting, and optimization. Freelance web developers typically manage their own schedules, find their own clients, and may specialize in areas like front-end, back-end, or full-stack development. They use a variety of programming languages and tools depending on the requirements of each project. This career offers flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and strong communication skills to manage client relationships effectively.

What does a freelance web developer do?

Freelance web developers create eye-catching and user-friendly websites to generate web traffic and promote their clients' products and services. Unlike staff web developers, freelance web developers are independent contractors who may work for an individual or business on a short- or long-term basis. As a freelance web developer, you determine your target audience based on your client's customer base and design a website to attract new customers and keep current customers interested. You may also meet with your client to ensure you understand their expectations and wants for their website. When developing a design, you may collaborate with a team to create a new site or find ways to improve an existing one. Functionality and aesthetic appeal are your two primary goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often frameworks such as React or Vue, supported by a solid portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and basic SEO or web analytics tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear client communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple projects and building client relationships. These qualities are essential for delivering high-quality work independently, meeting client expectations, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

How do freelance web developers typically manage client communication and project expectations?

Freelance web developers often handle all aspects of client communication themselves, from initial consultations to project delivery and support. Effective communication is crucial for understanding client goals, setting clear timelines, and managing expectations regarding deliverables and revisions. Many freelancers use project management tools, regular progress updates, and detailed contracts to ensure both parties are aligned throughout the process. This proactive approach helps prevent misunderstandings and builds strong client relationships, which are essential for repeat business and referrals.

Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

Can a freelance web developer be a freelancer?

A freelance web developer is by definition a freelancer who works independently on web development projects for clients. They typically set their own schedules, use skills like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may obtain certifications to demonstrate expertise. Being a freelancer allows for flexible work arrangements and self-management of projects.

How much money do freelance web developers make?

Freelance web developers' earnings vary based on experience, skills, and project complexity, but they typically charge hourly rates ranging from $25 to $150 or more. Many earn between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on workload and client base, with experienced developers often commanding higher rates for specialized skills like front-end or back-end development.

Job description

We are seeking a freelance designer with demonstrated copywriting ability to produce guest-facing and property collateral for Villatel Resort Orlando. The work spans print and digital: menus, welcome materials, directories, signage, event collateral, sales materials, and on-property digital displays โ€” executed within established brand standards and finished to a standard that holds up in a premium setting.

This is an ongoing engagement of approximately 10โ€“15 hours per week, with flexibility to scale up or down according to seasonal volume.

Scope of Work
  • In-villa collateral โ€” welcome cards and letters, villa directories, amenity and instructional signage, activity guides, QR-linked materials
  • Food and beverage โ€” restaurant and poolside menus, specials cards, event and catering menus, digital menu boards
  • Event and seasonal materials โ€” invitations, programs, posters, table tents, and on-property signage for activations, holiday programming, and private events
  • Sales and group collateral โ€” property one-pagers, rate sheets, meetings and celebrations materials, presentation decks
  • Digital assets โ€” on-property digital signage and screens, web page graphics and banners, digital versions of guest-facing materials
  • Copywriting โ€” headlines, body copy, and calls to action across the above, plus editing and proofing of existing copy
  • Production management โ€” print-ready file preparation, specification coordination with printers and vendors, and maintenance of an organized asset library
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of professional design and writing experience, with a portfolio demonstrating refined print and digital work
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or Figma; working knowledge of Canva for templated assets
  • Demonstrated copywriting ability โ€” menu descriptions, headlines, and short-form guest communications written to a publishable standard
  • Strong command of print production: bleeds, color management, resolution, paper stocks, finishing, and vendor specifications
  • Competence designing to digital specifications, including screen dimensions, resolution, and web-ready file formats
  • Ability to work within brand guidelines and extend them credibly into new formats
  • Availability during U.S. Eastern business hours for review cycles and time-sensitive requests
  • Background in luxury hospitality, resorts, hotels, or fine dining, with an understanding of how collateral supports the guest journey
  • Experience with resort or attraction-adjacent properties serving families and groups
  • Familiarity with Figma
  • Typographic sensibility and comfort with restrained, editorial layout
  • Located in or near Orlando, with occasional availability for on-property work
Attributes We Value
  • Refined creative judgment. You understand the difference between decorative and considered, and you consistently choose the latter.
  • Exacting attention to detail. Typography, spacing, alignment, and copy accuracy are non-negotiable in your work.
  • Organization and self-direction. You manage your own deadlines, maintain disciplined file structures, and require minimal oversight.
  • Responsiveness. You communicate proactively, acknowledge feedback promptly, and see projects through.
  • Professional collaboration. You take direction gracefully and offer a considered alternative when you believe there's a stronger solution.
  • Range with consistency. Whether a piece is playful or formal, it reads as unmistakably Villatel.
  • Hours: 10โ€“15 hours per week, ongoing, with seasonal flexibility
  • Compensation: [hourly range], commensurate with experience
  • Reports to: Creative Director, Villatel Resort Orlando
  • Tools: Contractor provides own hardware and software licenses

At Villatel, exceptional guest experiences start with an exceptional team, and weโ€™re looking for people who share our passion for hospitality. We offer competitive pay, flexible scheduling, and real opportunities to grow within an upscale resort brand redefining Orlando hospitality. Join us and help create the moments guests remember! Villatel is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any legally protected status.
