Freelance Tv Production information

What is freelance TV production?

Freelance TV production refers to working independently rather than as a full-time employee for a single company, providing services in various aspects of television production such as filming, editing, directing, or producing. Freelancers are typically hired on a project-by-project basis and may work for multiple clients, including TV networks, production companies, or independent producers. This role offers flexibility and variety, but also requires strong networking and self-promotion skills to secure consistent work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance TV Production professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Freelance TV Production, you need strong skills in video production, editing, project management, and a solid understanding of broadcast standards, typically supported by relevant experience or a degree in film, media, or communications. Proficiency with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and familiarity with camera and audio equipment is essential. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and networking abilities make you stand out by enabling you to collaborate effectively and secure new projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality content, meeting tight deadlines, and sustaining a successful freelance career in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance TV production professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance TV production professionals often face challenges such as inconsistent work schedules, tight deadlines, and the need to quickly adapt to different teams and project requirements. Building a strong professional network and maintaining clear communication with clients and crew members can help secure more reliable assignments. Staying organized, continuously updating technical and creative skills, and being flexible with last-minute changes are key strategies for thriving in this fast-paced environment.

  • Oversee production accounting system setup and workflows across Smart Accounting, PSL, Vista, and payroll systems.
  • Collaborate with Production Finance Ops, FP&A, BA, Billing/OTC, Tax Incentives, Treasury, Audit, Legal, Labor Relations, and IT teams.
  • Identify operational risks, reporting issues, labor concerns, or communication breakdowns early and drive resolution.
  • Support production audits, incentive reviews, compliance reviews, and reconciliations.
  • Travel to production locations to review accounting operations and team effectiveness.
  • Maintain knowledge of labor agreements, tax incentives, and evolving production finance practices.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Smart Accounting, PSL, Vista, EP, Cast & Crew, and related applications.
  • SAP experience required.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree required; CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of television and/or film production accounting and production finance experience.
  • Experience supporting high-budget ($100M+ gross production spend) scripted productions and complex production environments.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong leadership presence and communication skills.
  • Experience managing teams across multiple productions simultaneously.
  • Experience managing freelance accountants, prep/wrap accountants, and vendors.
  • Strong understanding of payroll, labor agreements, tax incentives, and financial controls.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
