What are some common challenges faced by freelance structural steel designers when coordinating with project teams remotely?

Freelance structural steel designers often encounter challenges in communication and collaboration, especially when working remotely with architects, engineers, and contractors. Sharing complex design changes, ensuring everyone is updated with the latest drawings, and aligning on project timelines can be more difficult without face-to-face meetings. To overcome these challenges, it is essential to use reliable project management and file-sharing tools, maintain clear documentation, and schedule regular virtual check-ins. Building strong professional relationships and setting clear expectations from the outset also help facilitate smoother coordination.

What does a Freelance Structural Steel Designer do?

A Freelance Structural Steel Designer is a professional who creates structural designs and drawings for steel frameworks used in buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. They work independently, often collaborating with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure that steel structures are safe, functional, and cost-effective. Their responsibilities include analyzing load requirements, creating detailed blueprints, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring compliance with building codes and standards. Freelance designers typically use specialized software like AutoCAD or Tekla Structures to produce their designs and may work on a range of projects from small renovations to large-scale constructions.

What is the difference between Freelance Structural Steel Designer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectFreelance Structural Steel DesignerStructural Engineer
CredentialsDesign certifications, CAD skillsEngineering degree, licensure
Work EnvironmentFreelance projects, consultingEngineering firms, construction sites
Industry UsageDesigning steel frameworks, detailingStructural analysis, project oversight

Freelance Structural Steel Designers focus on creating detailed steel framework designs, often working independently or with clients. Structural Engineers have a broader role, including analysis, calculations, and ensuring safety compliance. While both roles require design knowledge, Structural Engineers typically hold licensure and perform more comprehensive structural assessments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Structural Steel Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Structural Steel Designer, you need expertise in structural engineering principles, steel design codes, and a relevant degree in civil or structural engineering. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Tekla Structures), structural analysis programs, and familiarity with industry standards like AISC are typically required. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help you effectively collaborate with clients and other stakeholders while delivering accurate, timely designs. These abilities are essential to ensure safe, cost-effective, and compliant steel structures that meet client and regulatory requirements.

Job description

About Mariana Minerals
Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company on a mission to supply the critical minerals powering modern energy, AI, and defense technologies. We're reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
Role Overview
We are hiring a Structural Steel Designer to configure and lead structural steel drafting and modeling for our capital projects, from conceptual engineering through detailed design.
In this role, you will lead the configuration of projects in Tekla (or similar software packages), establishing the databases, libraries, templates, and workflows that standardize how Mariana models and drafts structural steel. You will develop 3D models and produce the general arrangement, fabrication, and erection drawings that take designs from concept to construction-ready. You will define how third-party models, vendor drawings, and EPC deliverables integrate into Mariana's hosted Tekla environment, ensuring quality and consistency across partners. This is a hands-on design role with the opportunity to shape best practices and tooling as Mariana scales its project delivery.
What You'll Do
  • Configure new projects in Tekla, including profile and section libraries, connection templates, and drawing styles
  • Develop and draft structural steel 3D models-framing plans, platforms, stairs, ladders, handrails, and supports
  • Generate general arrangement (GA), fabrication/shop, and erection drawings
  • Develop and draft connection details, bolt and weld specifications, and anchor bolt and embed plans
  • Produce material take-offs, bills of material, and bolt lists
  • Develop best practices, standards, and workflows for structural steel drafting and modeling
  • Define requirements for third party structural steel models, vendor drawings, and connection designs to integrate into Mariana's hosted Tekla environment
  • Define requirements for third party EPC companies to complete detailed engineering
  • Coordinate with process, piping, electrical, and civil/structural disciplines to ensure clash-free, constructible designs

What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of experience with Teka (or Advance Steel / SDS2)
  • CAD administration experience configuring projects, libraries, and templates
  • Strong 2D drafting experience-GA drawings, shop/fabrication drawings, erection drawings, and connection details
  • Strong 3D modeling experience-structural steel framing, platforms, stairs and handrails, and connection modeling
  • Working knowledge of structural steel detailing standards and codes (AISC, AWS)
  • Experience in industrial, mining, minerals processing, chemical, or heavy-industrial environments preferred
  • Ability to develop standards and workflows and work independently in a fast-moving, first-principles-driven environment
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and external EPC partners
