What does a freelance scaffolding design engineer do?

A Freelance Scaffolding Design Engineer is responsible for creating safe, efficient, and compliant scaffolding designs for construction projects on a contract basis. They assess site requirements, produce detailed drawings and calculations, and ensure that all designs meet relevant industry standards and regulations. These engineers often work independently with contractors, builders, or scaffolding companies to provide custom solutions tailored to specific project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance scaffolding design engineer?

To excel as a Freelance Scaffolding Design Engineer, you need a solid background in structural or civil engineering, a thorough understanding of scaffolding standards, and relevant professional qualifications such as a degree in engineering and industry certifications (e.g., CISRS or equivalent). Proficiency in CAD software (like AutoCAD or Revit), structural analysis tools, and familiarity with safety regulations are essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with clients and contractors while ensuring compliance and safety. These competencies are crucial for delivering safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant scaffolding solutions in diverse and dynamic project environments.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance scaffolding design engineers when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance Scaffolding Design Engineers often juggle projects for various clients, each with unique requirements and deadlines. Managing client expectations, ensuring clear communication, and adapting to different site conditions or safety standards can be challenging. Time management and prioritization are crucial, especially when coordinating with site managers, contractors, and regulatory authorities. Leveraging project management tools and maintaining transparent documentation helps ensure that all designs remain compliant, accurate, and delivered on schedule.

Job description

About Comp AI
Comp AI is reimagining compliance. We're rebuilding a stack that has been manual for far too long, with AI agents designed to handle the busywork. We're one of the fastest growing companies in the world, with more than 1,000 customers in less than 18 months and accelerating.
Our AI agents:
  • Draft and maintain policies based on our customers' tech stack
  • Collect ongoing evidence across code and browser use
  • Assess risks and monitor mission critical vendors
  • Review code and changes to a company's stack
  • Continuously monitor posture against common cyber security frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR

Compliance is the wedge. What we're building is the whole trust layer with continuous, AI-driven code security, cloud security, device security - owned end to end instead of stitched together between vendors. Always on, and better the longer you use it. We move fast and hold a high bar. The team is small enough that each person's work shows up directly in our product.
The Role
We are hiring a Senior Design Engineer who will single-handedly own the bridge between product design and frontend engineering. In this hybrid role, you won't just hand off flat mockups to engineers - you will design user experiences and write the clean, production-ready React code that brings them to life in GitHub.
You will be the founding architect of Comp AI's design system, maintaining our UI components, global tokens, and interface logic to ensure our fast-shipping engineering team can build cohesive features at scale.
We build with AI, and we expect you to as well. The best design engineers we've met use AI to compress the distance between an idea and a shipped interface - exploring more directions, scaffolding faster, and spending their own time on the judgment calls that actually matter. Speed without a drop in craft is the bar.
Core Responsibilities
  • Own the Design System: Architect, scale, and maintain our foundational design system (components, tokens, styling architecture) in both design tooling and code.
  • End-to-End Product Design: Craft seamless UX flows, wireframes, high-fidelity UI screens, and interactive prototypes for complex AI-driven dashboards and workflows.
  • Frontend Implementation: Translate your own designs into high-quality, responsive component code and commit changes directly to our GitHub repository.
  • Developer Enablement: Establish crystal-clear documentation and interactive code specifications so full-stack and backend engineers can seamlessly implement product pages.
  • Maintain Visual Consistency: Continuously audit our live platform to eliminate UI regressions and ensure pixel-perfect execution across the application.
  • Raise the Team's Velocity: Bring AI into the design and build loop - prototyping, code generation, review, documentation - and share what works so the rest of the team ships faster too.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Experience: 7+ years of professional experience in product design, frontend engineering, or a dedicated Design Engineer / UX Engineer role (preferably at a fast-growing B2B SaaS or developer-tooling startup).
  • Expert Designer: Mastery of a modern design tool - Figma, Framer, Penpot, or whatever you do your best work in - including component systems, variants, and interactive prototyping. We care about the output, not the logo on the file.
  • Production Code Capable: Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS/CSS Modules, and Tailwind CSS.
  • AI-Accelerated: Demonstrated use of AI tooling (coding agents, design/prototyping tools, LLM workflows) to move faster without lowering the quality bar. We'll ask you how you use it and where you don't.
  • Git Workflows: Confident managing branches, opening pull requests, resolving conflicts, and navigating GitHub codebases.
  • Systems Thinker: Deep understanding of component-driven architecture, design tokens, responsive web layouts, and state management.

Bonus Points
  • Experience working on open-source software or developer-facing products.
  • Familiarity with UI documentation tools like Storybook.
  • A background or strong interest in AI products, data visualization, or the cyber security/compliance space.
