Job description

Job Overview
Design Engineer is an experienced-level position for an individual with extensive experience to apply thorough knowledge of applicable engineering theories, engineering practices, and business practices to provide value to Bastian engineering teams. Full understanding of theory specific to the candidate's area of expertise is required. The Design Engineer II's responsibility is to participate as a team member for development projects in order to deliver a high-quality product to the market. Primary job functions include 3D modeling, drafting, hand calculations, and detailed analysis to verify the product's design, and project documentation up to and including product specifications, testing procedures, and technical reports.
Job Functions
  • Display thorough knowledge of applicable theories, practices, and business practices.
  • Train others in the application of engineering practices
  • Modify, critique, and release equipment designs per customer and Bastian specifications and standards
  • Collaborate with Automation, Controls, or Commissioning engineers to create 3D layouts for system studies
  • Create detailed installation and layout drawings
  • Troubleshoot and modify manufactured equipment, creating red line drawings, updating SolidWorks models and drawings to create As-Built packages prior to shipment
  • Independently establish work tasks in order to successfully meet expectations.
  • Effectively communicate schedules, design concepts, and training to personnel at Toyota Automated Logistics and end user facilities
  • Frequent and consistent interface with external clients is important. Assist with building relationships for future business opportunities.
  • Create and modify mechanical manuals, preventative maintenance schedules and tasks, and troubleshooting guides
  • Work independently on varied and complex tasks and/or provide functional leadership without direct supervision as needed
  • Provide expertise and guidance to less experienced individuals
  • Provide quality oversight, review, edit, and refine the technical documentation of peers and vendors
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable technologies or programs
  • Be a team member and contributor within the office, providing help outside of department scope when required
  • Delivering projects that meet or exceed customer's expectations, developing repeat customers.
  • Attend meetings and functions on time with active involvement
  • Research new components and materials, providing recommendations for adoption into standards
  • Coordinate with other engineers or teams to ensure all components are accounted for across disciplines
  • Support after-sales personnel on technical aspects of equipment and systems
  • Support project installations and post-startup mechanical maintenance trips
  • Prepare procedures, reports, and specifications
  • Perform discipline checks on product/equipment design and technical documentation
  • Design, execute, and report on product/equipment design validation tests

Travel Requirements
  • Post startup maintenance, 5% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Bastian)
  • Customer and vendor site visits, 5% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Bastian)

Preferred Skills and Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or related, and 4+ years of related experience
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Literate with Microsoft Office product suite
  • Mechanical hands-on aptitude with troubleshooting know-how
  • SolidWorks experience
  • AutoCAD experience, 2D and 3D
  • Design for Manufacturing/Design for Assembly experience with ability to produce fabrication, welding, and assembly drawings from 3D models efficiently
  • Fluent in advanced analysis techniques, i.e. FEA, SolidWorks Simulator
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
