Freelance Rotating Equipment Engineer information

What is a freelance rotating equipment engineer?

A Freelance Rotating Equipment Engineer is an independent professional who specializes in the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of machinery with moving parts, such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and engines, for various industries. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers work on a project or contract basis, often providing expertise to multiple clients simultaneously. Their responsibilities may include equipment selection, performance analysis, failure investigation, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. They often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and may work on-site or remotely, depending on the project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance rotating equipment engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Rotating Equipment Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, in-depth knowledge of rotating machinery (like pumps, compressors, turbines), and relevant industry experience, often supported by a degree and professional certifications (such as API or ASME standards). Familiarity with design and analysis software (e.g., AutoCAD, ANSYS), condition monitoring systems, and reliability tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure reliable equipment operation, client satisfaction, and successful project delivery across diverse industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by freelance rotating equipment engineers when working with multiple clients?

Freelance Rotating Equipment Engineers often juggle projects for various clients, which can mean adapting quickly to different company standards, documentation processes, and communication styles. Coordinating schedules for site visits or remote consultations can be complex, especially if clients are located in different regions or industries. Additionally, freelancers may need to stay updated on the latest industry regulations and best practices to meet each client's specific compliance requirements. Building strong communication and organizational skills is key to successfully navigating these challenges while delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer

New Product Development - Turbomachinery & Systems

Location: Kalamazoo, MI

Role Summary:

Join our Turbomachinery & Systems New Product Development team and help develop the next generation of sealing solutions for industrial compressors. This role focuses on the design, development, testing, and commercialization of Dry Gas Mechanical Seals and associated auxiliary systems.

This role develops innovative compressor sealing solutions for turbomachinery applications, including dry gas mechanical seals, separation seals, seal cartridges, and associated auxiliary systems. The engineer will work through the full product-development lifecycle, from concept and design through analysis, prototype testing, product qualification, manufacturing launch, and field support.

You will work on technically challenging projects spanning mechanical design, turbomachinery, experimental testing, simulation, instrumentation, and emerging smart-seal technologies. As our portfolio evolves toward connected and intelligent sealing solutions, you will also have opportunities to apply sensors, data acquisition, IoT, and mechatronics technologies to improve seal performance, reliability, and condition monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop innovative compressor sealing solutions, including Dry Gas Mechanical Seals and auxiliary systems, from concept through commercialization.

Perform engineering analysis using FEA, hand calculations, computational tools, and engineering models.

Design prototypes, test fixtures, instrumentation, and experimental setups.

Develop and execute laboratory and product validation test programs and analyze test data to drive design improvements.

Apply mechanical engineering fundamentals including fluid dynamics, tribology, materials, thermal effects, vibration, and rotating equipment principles.

Support development of smart and connected sealing technologies, including sensors, instrumentation, data acquisition, IoT, and condition-monitoring solutions.

Develop 2D/3D designs, engineering drawings, specifications, test procedures, and technical documentation.

Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Product Management, Aftermarket, and customers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective products.

Required Qualifications:

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

8+ years of experience in rotating equipment, turbomachinery, compressors, mechanical seals, or a related industry.

Experience in mechanical design, engineering analysis, testing, or new product development.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.

Experience with Dry Gas Mechanical Seals, mechanical seals, compressor sealing systems, or sealing auxiliaries.

Hands-on experience with turbomachinery or compressors.

Experience with ANSYS/FEA and SolidWorks or other 3D CAD tools.

Experience with sensors, instrumentation, data acquisition, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, or similar engineering tools.

Knowledge of mechatronics, IoT, condition monitoring, or smart/connected products.

Experience developing and validating products through prototype, testing, and commercialization.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of mechanical engineering, turbomachinery, sealing technology, experimentation, and digital innovation. You will help develop technologies that directly impact the performance, reliability, efficiency, and safety of industrial compressor systems while building expertise in both established and emerging sealing technologies.
