Manager Heat Transfer Engineer information

What does a manager heat transfer engineer do?

A Manager Heat Transfer Engineer leads a team of engineers specializing in the analysis and design of systems that involve the transfer of heat, such as HVAC systems, power plants, or industrial machinery. Their duties include overseeing projects, providing technical guidance, and ensuring that heat transfer processes are efficient and meet safety and regulatory standards. They also coordinate with other departments, manage resources, and contribute to research and development efforts to improve thermal system performance. Strong leadership, technical expertise, and project management skills are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager heat transfer engineer?

To excel as a Manager Heat Transfer Engineer, you need a solid background in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and engineering principles, usually supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical or chemical engineering and relevant experience. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS Fluent, AutoCAD, and proficiency in project management tools are typically required, along with professional engineering licensure (PE) being a strong asset. Outstanding leadership, team management, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are essential for successfully leading engineering teams, ensuring high-quality designs, and delivering innovative thermal solutions on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges faced by a manager heat transfer engineer, and how can they be addressed?

As a Manager Heat Transfer Engineer, a common challenge is balancing the technical demands of heat transfer projects with leadership responsibilities such as team management and cross-department collaboration. Ensuring that the team stays updated on the latest industry standards and simulation tools, while also meeting tight project deadlines, requires strong organizational and communication skills. Addressing these challenges involves fostering an environment of continuous learning, delegating tasks effectively, and maintaining clear communication channels between engineering, manufacturing, and project management teams.

What is the difference between Manager Heat Transfer Engineer vs Heat Transfer Engineer?

AspectManager Heat Transfer EngineerHeat Transfer Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; often requires experience in project managementBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; focus on technical skills
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, collaborates with departmentsPerforms design, analysis, and testing of heat transfer systems
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, energy, aerospace sectors for overseeing projectsCommonly employed in R&D, design, and technical departments

The main difference is that the Manager Heat Transfer Engineer oversees teams and projects, while the Heat Transfer Engineer focuses on technical design and analysis. Both roles require similar technical credentials, but the manager position involves leadership and project management responsibilities.

Job description

Regular Employee | Salary Exempt | $0.00 - 0.00

What you’ll do:

Weare seeking a Thermal Management Engineer to lead the design, simulation, andintegration of advanced thermal management systems for our electric vehicle(EV) platform. In this role, you will be responsible for developing efficientheating and cooling solutions across the entire high-voltagepowertrain—including battery packs, electric drive units (motors andinverters), power electronics, and cabin HVAC. You will work closely withcross-functional design, software, and validation teams to maximize energyefficiency, optimize battery life, extend vehicle range, and ensure strictcompliance with safety standards.

Job responsibilities:

  • System Design & Integration: Design and optimize fluid networks, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and refrigerant systems to manage thermal loads across the battery, drive unit, and passenger cabin
  • Part Release: CAD design of thermal systems and components, packaging studies, routing
  • Simulation & Analysis: Perform 1D and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and thermal analysis using tools like GT-Suite, or Ansys Fluent to evaluate fluid flow, heat transfer, and system power consumption
  • Component Specification: Select and specify thermal hardware, including chillers, electric compressors, high-voltage heaters, coolant pumps, and thermal interface materials
  • Control Strategy & Software: Collaborate with controls and embedded software teams to develop closed-loop thermal control algorithms and software logic
  • Testing & Validation: Plan and execute bench testing, environmental chamber tests, and track testing using data acquisition systems to validate thermal models against real-world performance
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with mechanical, electrical, and vehicle integration teams to resolve packaging constraints and manage mass/cost trade-offs
  • Supplier Management: Work with component suppliers and Tier-1 vendors on Design Verification (DV) and Production Verification (PV) phases
What you need to be successful:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Thermal Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience: 6+ years of experience in thermal engineering within the automotive or electric vehicle industry
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong grounding in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, convective heat transfer, and vapor compression cycles
  • Simulation Tools: Hands-on proficiency with thermal/fluid CAE tools (e.g., GT-Suite, STAR-CCM+, Ansys Fluent) and CAD platforms (CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX)
  • Testing: Demonstrated experience with data acquisition tools (e.g., CANoe, Dewesoft, MATLAB/Simulink) and environmental thermal testing protocols
  • Experience with HV EV battery thermal management, heat pump system design, or fast-charging thermal management
