What is freelance research?

Freelance research involves independently providing research services to clients on a contract or project basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single organization. Freelance researchers gather, analyze, and synthesize information for businesses, academics, authors, or other professionals who need specialized data or insights. Projects can range from market research and competitor analysis to academic literature reviews or fact-checking. This work offers flexibility and the ability to choose projects, but also requires self-marketing and time management skills.

How do freelance researchers typically find and collaborate with clients on projects?

Freelance researchers often find clients through online platforms, professional networks, or referrals. Once a project is secured, collaboration usually takes place via email, video calls, and shared documents, requiring clear communication about project goals, deadlines, and deliverables. Building trust and maintaining regular updates are crucial, as clients may not have direct oversight. Many freelancers also use project management tools to stay organized and ensure transparency throughout the research process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Researcher, you need strong analytical abilities, critical thinking, and subject matter expertise, often backed by a relevant degree or research experience. Familiarity with databases, citation tools, data analysis software, and online research platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability are vital soft skills for managing clients and shifting project demands. These skills ensure accurate, credible research deliverables and client satisfaction in a competitive freelance market.

PURPOSE

We are seeking a hands-on Growth Marketing Manager to own and scale our digital customer acquisition programs. This role is responsible for driving measurable growth in qualified website traffic and revenue through paid media, experimentation, and data-driven marketing strategies.

The Growth Marketing Manager will manage and optimize paid acquisition campaigns across digital channels while developing structured frameworks for campaign testing, audience targeting, and performance optimization. This role requires someone who is comfortable working directly within advertising platforms, analyzing campaign performance, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and scale growth.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical thinking with operational campaign management experience and a deep understanding of performance marketing metrics such as customer acquisition cost (CAC), lifetime value (LTV), and return on ad spend (ROAS). This role plays a key part in driving customer growth by identifying, testing, and scaling the digital acquisition strategies that bring new customers to our platform.

Key Responsibilities and accountabilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Paid Media and Customer Acquisition

  • Own and scale paid acquisition channels as a primary driver of qualified website traffic, customer growth, and revenue.
  • Plan, launch, and manage paid media campaigns across platforms such as Google Ads, Meta, YouTube, Programmatic (Criteo) and emerging acquisition channels.
  • Manage and optimize paid acquisition campaigns across multiple channels, balancing performance, efficiency, and scale.
  • Manage day-to-day campaign operations including budget pacing, bid adjustments, targeting optimization, and creative deployment.
  • Continuously optimize campaigns to improve ROAS, reduce CAC, and increase revenue contribution from marketing channels.

Growth Strategy and Experimentation

  • Develop and execute structured experimentation programs across audiences, creative, landing pages, and bidding strategies.
  • Continuously test and refine campaign targeting, messaging, and creative formats to improve acquisition performance.
  • Analyze funnel performance and marketing metrics including CAC, LTV, conversion rates, and revenue attribution.
  • Identify and test new acquisition channels, platforms, and audience opportunities that can unlock incremental growth.
  • Monitor industry trends and platform updates to identify emerging advertising opportunities and competitive advantages.

Creative Development and Performance Testing

  • Develop a scalable creative testing engine that continuously generates and evaluates new ad concepts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external freelancers to produce high-performing creative assets including ad copy, visual formats, and video content.
  • Develop performance-driven creative briefs informed by audience insights, campaign data, and competitive research.
  • Continuously test creative formats, messaging, and audience targeting to improve engagement and conversion performance.

Social Media and Lifecycle Marketing Leadership

  • Provide direction and support for lifecycle marketing and social media initiatives so they align with customer acquisition and growth priorities.
  • Work closely with the Lifecycle Marketing and Social Media Marketing Supervisor to ensure alignment between acquisition campaigns and ongoing customer engagement initiatives.

Measurement, Attribution and Reporting

  • Track marketing performance across the acquisition funnel including traffic quality, conversion rates, CAC, LTV, and ROAS.
  • Develop reporting frameworks that provide visibility into marketing performance and acquisition efficiency.
  • Evaluate channel effectiveness using attribution frameworks and incrementality testing to better understand acquisition impact.
  • Forecast marketing performance and model the relationship between marketing spend, acquisition costs, and revenue growth.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with sales, product marketing and e-commerce to improve acquisition performance and customer conversion journeys.
  • Collaborate with e-commerce to identify opportunities to improve landing pages, user flows, and conversion experiences.
  • Partner with freelance creative teams to develop high-performing marketing assets and messaging across acquisition channels.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • 5+ years of experience in growth marketing, performance marketing, or digital acquisition roles with hands-on campaign management experience.
  • Proven experience managing paid media campaigns across platforms such as Google Ads, Meta, YouTube, and other digital advertising channels.
  • Experience managing and optimizing paid media budgets with accountability for performance metrics such as CAC and ROAS.
  • Strong understanding of performance marketing metrics including CAC, LTV, ROAS, and conversion rates.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms used for segmentation, targeting, and lifecycle marketing programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Customer Insights Journey is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience collaborating with internal teams and freelance resources to develop and test digital marketing creative.
  • Experience working in a performance marketing role within a digital marketing agency is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate marketing data into actionable growth strategies.
  • Familiarity with modern AI-powered tools used for competitive research, marketing analysis, and content development, and an interest in applying these tools to improve marketing effectiveness.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple campaigns and priorities.
  • Comfortable working directly in marketing platforms and taking ownership of campaign performance, testing new ideas, and optimizing based on data.

This role requires daily use of digital advertising platforms and marketing tools that operate primarily in English, including Google Ads, Meta, YouTube, and CRM systems. The position also involves reviewing platform documentation and collaborating with external partners and vendors outside Quebec who communicate in English. English proficiency is therefore required to manage campaigns and interpret marketing performance data effectively.
