What is a freelance pediatric medical coder?

Freelance pediatric medical coders are independent professionals who specialize in translating pediatric healthcare services, diagnoses, and procedures into standardized medical codes for billing and insurance purposes. They work with pediatricians, clinics, or hospitals on a contract or per-project basis, rather than as full-time employees. Their expertise ensures accurate coding for pediatric-specific conditions, compliance with healthcare regulations, and maximized reimbursement for providers. Freelance coders often work remotely and may serve multiple clients, offering flexibility and specialized pediatric coding knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance pediatric medical coder?

To thrive as a Freelance Pediatric Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical coding systems (ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS), pediatric medical terminology, and a relevant certification such as CPC or COC. Familiarity with coding software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and secure data transfer tools is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with healthcare providers. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring compliant, timely reimbursements and maintaining the integrity of pediatric patient records in a remote, independent setting.

What are some common challenges freelance pediatric medical coders face, and how can they effectively manage these challenges?

Freelance pediatric medical coders often encounter challenges such as staying current with frequent coding updates, managing varying documentation quality from different providers, and ensuring compliance with pediatric-specific coding guidelines. Additionally, as freelancers, they must juggle multiple clients and adapt to diverse practice management systems. Building a routine for ongoing education, maintaining strong communication with clients, and utilizing reliable coding resources can help freelancers stay organized and accurate in their work.

Job description

EXPERIENCE IS A MUST !

Experienced Pediatric Medical Biller – Full-Time

Windermere Pediatrics

Windermere Pediatrics is a small, independent pediatric practice seeking an experienced, full-time Pediatric Medical Biller to join our team.

This is NOT an entry-level billing position. We are looking for someone who already has hands-on medical billing experience and can confidently manage claims, denials, accounts receivable, payment issues, and insurance follow-up.

Completion of a medical billing/coding program or certification without actual hands-on billing experience does not meet the requirements for this position.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Full-cycle medical billing for a pediatric practice
  • Reviewing and submitting clean claims
  • Working rejected and denied claims through resolution
  • Insurance A/R follow-up and aging
  • Correcting and resubmitting claims when necessary
  • Payment posting and reconciliation
  • Identifying underpayments and unpaid claims
  • Communicating with insurance companies regarding claim issues
  • Reviewing coding and billing for accuracy before submission
  • Handling patient billing questions and account issues when necessary
  • Identifying recurring billing problems and helping improve office collections
  • Working closely with providers and office management to resolve billing issues

Pediatric Billing Experience

The ideal candidate should be comfortable with billing situations commonly encountered in pediatrics, including:

  • Preventive/well-child visits
  • Sick visits and E/M coding
  • Same-day sick and well visits
  • Modifier 25
  • Vaccine billing
  • Vaccine administration codes
  • VFC and commercial vaccine billing
  • Medicaid and managed Medicaid
  • Commercial insurance plans
  • Coordination of benefits
  • Claim denials, corrections, and appeals

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on medical billing experience
  • Experience working claims from submission through payment
  • Strong experience with insurance denials and A/R follow-up
  • Understanding of CPT, ICD-10, modifiers, and E/M billing
  • Experience communicating directly with insurance companies
  • Ability to independently investigate and resolve unpaid or incorrectly paid claims
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Dependable and organized
  • Comfortable working independently without constant supervision

Strongly Preferred

  • Previous pediatric medical billing experience
  • Experience with PCC (Physician's Computer Company)
  • Experience billing pediatric vaccines and vaccine administration
  • Experience with Florida Medicaid/managed Medicaid and commercial insurance
  • Experience working in an independent physician practice

PCC experience is preferred but not required for an otherwise highly qualified pediatric biller.

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Monday through Friday
  • May include approximately 1–2 Saturdays per month
  • Must be dependable and available during scheduled working hours

Additional Office Responsibilities

We are a small independent practice, so teamwork is important. Although billing will be your primary responsibility, you may occasionally be asked to help with general office duties such as:

  • Answering phones
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Patient check-in
  • Covering during lunches or when another team member is unavailable

We are looking for someone who is willing to be part of the entire office team, not someone who only wants to work a billing queue.

Who Should NOT Apply

Please do not apply if:

  • Your only experience is completing a medical billing or coding course
  • You have no hands-on physician billing experience
  • You have never worked insurance denials or A/R
  • Your experience is primarily data entry without responsibility for claim resolution
  • You are looking for an entry-level billing position

Why Work With Windermere Pediatrics?

We are a small, independent pediatric office that values our patients and our employees. We offer a friendly, relaxed work environment where team members know each other and everyone's contribution matters.

We want someone who can take ownership of our billing, communicate openly with management, and become a long-term part of our team.

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

To help us identify qualified applicants, please answer the following questions with your application:

  1. How many years of hands-on physician/medical billing experience do you have?
  2. How many years of pediatric billing experience do you have?
  3. Have you personally worked insurance denials and A/R aging?
  4. Have you billed pediatric vaccines and vaccine administration codes?
  5. Have you billed same-day sick and well-child visits?
  6. Have you previously used PCC (Physician's Computer Company)?
  7. Which insurance payers have you worked with?
  8. Briefly describe what you would do if a claim has been unpaid for 60+ days.

Applicants who do not meet the required hands-on billing experience may not be considered.
