What is a freelance creative?

A Freelance Creative is a self-employed professional who provides creative services such as graphic design, writing, photography, video editing, or other artistic work on a project-by-project basis. They typically work with multiple clients rather than being employed by a single company. Freelance Creatives have the flexibility to choose their projects, set their own rates, and manage their schedules, but they are also responsible for finding clients and handling business operations like invoicing and marketing.

What are some common challenges freelance creatives face, and how can they be managed?

Freelance Creatives often face challenges such as inconsistent workflow, client communication, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Managing multiple projects for different clients requires effective organization, time management, and clear expectation-setting from the start of each project. Many Freelance Creatives use project management tools and regular client check-ins to stay on track and ensure timely delivery. Building a reliable client base and setting clear contractual terms can also help reduce uncertainties and lead to more stable business growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance creative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Creative, you need a strong portfolio showcasing expertise in visual design, copywriting, content creation, or multimedia production, often supported by formal education or self-taught proficiency in relevant disciplines. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or digital marketing platforms is highly valuable. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, adaptability, and time management set top freelancers apart. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality work, managing multiple projects, and building lasting client relationships in a competitive, independent environment.

Job description

Freelance Senior Graphic Designer & Creative Support Consultant

Location: Melbourne, Florida
Work Arrangement: Approximately 85% Remote / Work From Home
Occasional On-Site & Local Support: Brevard County, Florida
Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Starting Rate: $45/hour

Opportunity & Growth

This is an ongoing 1099 freelance opportunity with the potential for consistent work and professional growth.

After three months of consistent, reliable performance, compensation may be reviewed for a potential increase.

For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to become a trusted creative resource, take on additional responsibilities and grow with the needs of the business.

About the Role

I am an independent creative consultant supporting a leading aerospace and defense company. I provide creative consulting and graphic design support primarily to the company’s executive team and Board of Directors.

I am looking for an experienced, highly capable Senior Graphic Designer & Creative Support Consultant who can provide ongoing assistance and help lighten my workload.

This is a hands-on position that requires more than simply completing assigned design tasks. I am looking for someone who is self-motivated, resourceful, organized, dependable and capable of taking a project from start to finish with minimal supervision.

You should be comfortable receiving a project or general direction, researching what is needed, figuring out the best approach, completing the work and delivering a polished final product.

You Will Have Direction and Support

Although this position requires independence, you will not be expected to figure out a project without direction.

Before each project begins, there will be a project briefing outlining the scope, expectations, deliverables, priorities and timeline. You will be given clear direction regarding what is needed, along with the appropriate brand guidelines and resources.

From there, you will be expected to take ownership of the project, ask questions when necessary, research what you need to know and work independently to bring the project to completion.

The goal is to provide you with clear direction up front while giving you the independence to execute the work.

What You’ll Do

Projects will vary depending on current business needs and may include:

  • Graphic design and production for executive-level presentations and communications
  • Creating and editing presentations and other executive materials
  • Designing internal communications, program materials, event collateral, signage, brochures and other branded materials
  • Preparing files for print and digital distribution
  • Updating and maintaining existing branded materials
  • Creating layouts and graphics while following established corporate brand standards
  • Researching information independently to help bring projects from concept to completion
  • Managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Reviewing your own work carefully for accuracy, consistency and quality
  • Communicating project status and identifying potential issues before they become problems
  • Assisting with physical event preparation, setup, printing and production
  • Retrieving printed materials, promotional items and branded merchandise from vendors throughout Brevard County
  • Delivering materials to the corporate headquarters in Melbourne
  • Delivering files, printed materials or other items to print shops, embroidery companies, promotional product vendors and other local vendors
  • Occasionally picking up and transporting materials needed for projects
  • Assisting with other local errands related to creative projects and events when needed

Required Qualifications

All requirements listed below must be met.

  • Expert-level experience with Adobe Illustrator
  • Expert-level experience with Adobe InDesign
  • Expert-level experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, composition and visual communication
  • Strong understanding of professional graphic design and production
  • Ability to follow and consistently apply established brand guidelines
  • Ability to independently research and solve problems
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professionalism and discretion when working with executive-level materials
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to take initiative and anticipate what needs to happen next
  • Must be local to Melbourne, Florida/Brevard County
  • Must have a reliable, functioning vehicle
  • Must be comfortable occasionally traveling locally for project-related pickups and deliveries
  • Must be dependable and responsive when projects require immediate attention

Brand Guidelines

You will be provided with corporate brand guidelines and will be expected to read, understand and independently apply those guidelines to your work.

You should be comfortable working within an established visual system and maintaining a high level of consistency across all materials.

The ability to follow brand standards is a requirement of the position.

Feedback, Revisions & Client Service

Because this work supports executive-level clients, the ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback is essential.

Creative work often goes through revisions based on client feedback, changing needs or additional direction. Edits and revisions are a normal and expected part of the creative process.

You should be comfortable receiving constructive criticism, making requested changes without taking feedback personally, and working collaboratively to ensure that the final product meets the client’s expectations.

Our goal is always to provide the best possible service and final product for the client.

A successful candidate will be someone who can confidently stand behind their design decisions while also understanding that client service and delivering what the client needs are priorities.

Deadlines & Turnaround Expectations

This position will occasionally involve quick-turn projects and immediate action.

Priorities can change quickly, and some projects may have short turnaround times due to executive meetings, events, presentations, printing deadlines or other business needs.

When a deadline is established, the deadline must be met.

The ability to prioritize, work efficiently, communicate proactively and complete projects on time is critical to the success of this position.

If an issue arises that could affect a deadline, you are expected to communicate that as soon as possible, not after the deadline has passed.

Reliability is extremely important in this role.

The Ideal Candidate

I’m looking for someone who is confident, resourceful, self-directed and eager to grow.

You should be the type of person who can receive a project briefing and think:

“Got it. I understand what is needed. I’ll figure out the details and get it done.”

You don’t need to know everything on day one. However, you do need to know how to research, troubleshoot and find solutions independently.

You should be comfortable working with established corporate brand standards and applying them consistently across a wide variety of projects.

This position is a great fit for someone who:

  • Takes initiative
  • Doesn’t need constant direction after receiving a project briefing
  • Can take a project and run with it
  • Enjoys problem-solving
  • Is comfortable researching and figuring things out independently
  • Has strong graphic design and production skills
  • Can work quickly without sacrificing accuracy
  • Is highly organized
  • Is dependable and responsive
  • Communicates proactively
  • Takes pride in polished, professional work
  • Can follow brand standards precisely
  • Is comfortable receiving and implementing constructive feedback
  • Understands that revisions are a normal part of the creative process
  • Wants the opportunity to grow professionally
  • Is comfortable with tight deadlines and changing priorities
  • Is willing to occasionally handle local pickups and deliveries
  • Understands that executive-level work requires discretion, professionalism and attention to detail

Work Environment

Approximately 85% of the work can be completed remotely from your home office.

Occasional on-site work and local transportation throughout Brevard County will be required based on project needs.

On-site responsibilities may include:

  • Event preparation and setup
  • Printing and production needs
  • Physical collateral
  • Executive meetings or presentations
  • Picking up or delivering materials
  • Vendor coordination
  • Other projects where an on-site presence is necessary

Because of these requirements, applicants must be local to Melbourne/Brevard County.

Contractor Requirements

This is an independent contractor (1099) position paid hourly at a starting rate of $45/hour.

After three months of consistent, reliable work, performance and workload may be reviewed for a potential hourly rate increase.

You will be responsible for:

  • Tracking your own hours
  • Tracking the projects/jobs you work on
  • Providing accurate invoices
  • Managing your own schedule and workflow
  • Providing your own computer and necessary design software/equipment
  • Maintaining reliable transportation for required local pickups and deliveries

Before beginning work, you will be required to sign applicable agreements, including a Master Services Agreement and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

Due to the nature of the work and the clients served, confidentiality, discretion, professionalism and reliability are essential.

Important: Please Read Before Applying

This position requires someone who can hit the ground running.

You will receive project briefings, clear direction and the resources necessary to perform the work. However, you will be expected to read, learn and understand provided materials and brand guidelines independently.

This is not a position where every step of a project will be explained to you.

You must be comfortable figuring things out, asking appropriate questions, researching when necessary and taking ownership of your work.

There will also be times when a project needs immediate attention or has a very quick turnaround.

If a deadline is given, it is expected to be met.

Dependability, communication and the ability to work well with feedback are just as important as design ability in this position.

How to Apply

Please provide:

  1. Resume
  2. Portfolio demonstrating strong graphic design and production skills
  3. A brief description of your experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
  4. Your general availability each week
  5. Confirmation that you are located in or near Melbourne, Florida
  6. Confirmation that you have reliable transportation and are comfortable handling occasional local pickups and deliveries
  7. A brief note explaining why you feel you would be a good fit for a role requiring a high degree of independence, initiative, reliability, collaboration and attention to detail
