Job description

We have an exciting new role for a Senior Technical Designer based in our Downtown, Los Angeles workshop shop. Reporting to the Head of Technical Design in our London Office, this role will work closely with the team of technical designers both permanent and freelance, production managers and the workshop manager. In the short term, the role would focus on producing high quality construction drawings that aid the transition from creative concept through to build.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced technical/construction draughtsperson, who is used to producing drawings at pace, that are workshop ready. Meeting the high standards required by creating extremely detailed drawings and instructions that can be easily read and followed. You will also have the ability to take any concept proposal and rationalise this into something that can be built, that is fully thought through and is realistic to proposed budgets and timelines.
You will have a comprehensive understanding of materials and construction methodology and have experience in seeing projects through to workshop completion. You will be comfortable presenting and communicating internally and to our clients as needed.
This role is as varied as our work and demands quick thinking, quick action and the ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. You will be responsible for maintaining the high standards that live in our company values and strive for the perfection we aim for in our Vision.
To be successful in this role you must be accustomed to an extremely fast-paced design studio, have an exceptional eye for detail and be able to demonstrate a can-do attitude. You will have previous experience with fabrication and construction methods. You will be comfortable with Vectorworks or a similar CAD package (AutoCAD, Solidworks, Rhino etc.). Adobe Creative Suite and Google Suite knowledge would be advantageous.
Role and Responsibilities
  • Meet the standards for drawings leaving the office into the workshop
  • Liaise and communicate time allocation to produce construction drawings
  • Work independently to create high-quality detailed technical drawings and plans based on designs supplied by internal and external designers and make modifications to existing drawings
  • Use Vectorworks/AutoCAD to create designs in 2D and 3D
  • Liaise with Production managers, creatives and if necessary Clients, to understand their design requirements and provide technical advice to the workshop and construction team
  • Provide accurate, detailed and to scale drawings in the third angle
  • Ensure drawings are compliant with industry and health and safety standards and protocols
  • Apply knowledge of materials and engineering principles to check feasibility of manufacture and construction of the item
  • Conduct site visits and surveys when required
  • Present working drawings for use in stages of the project from concept development to construction drawings
  • Produce installation and manufacturing documentation
  • Maintain accurate records

Skills & Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of essential Skills and Experience:
  • A strong portfolio of design to production work.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experienced learning within retail, exhibition, interior design, set design or the events industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Vectorworks or AutoCAD.
  • Good knowledge of Adobe creative suite and Google Suite will be useful.
  • Strong MAC/PC skills and experience working with cloud-based sharing platforms and online communication software.
  • Must have the ability to present ideas and proposals confidently.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, reacting appropriately while listening and understanding the views of others.
  • A good understanding of manufacturing methods, its limitations and strong technical skills.
  • Experience and understanding of printing methods, production techniques and traditional methods
  • Understanding of CNC machine techniques and capabilities.
  • Understanding and in-depth working knowledge of materials and finishing techniques used in fabrication and their limitations.
  • Experience of project managing work from concept to completion in a timely manner, keeping good communication with all key stakeholders of the project.
  • A proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external managers and contacts.
  • Verbal communication skills to connect with all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
  • Valid driving licence is not required but would be beneficial.
