What is a freelance brand strategist?

A Freelance Brand Strategist is an independent professional who helps businesses define, develop, and communicate their brand identity. They analyze market trends, target audiences, and competitors to create strategies that differentiate a brand and increase its market presence. Unlike in-house strategists, freelancers work on a project basis with various clients, providing tailored branding solutions to meet specific business goals. Their work often includes brand positioning, messaging, visual identity guidance, and marketing recommendations.

How do freelance brand strategists typically collaborate with clients and other creative professionals during a branding project?

Freelance brand strategists often act as the central point of communication between the client and various creative partners, such as designers, copywriters, and marketing consultants. They facilitate discovery sessions, gather input, and translate business objectives into strategic direction for the brand. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and collaborative workshops are common practices to ensure alignment and progress. Strong interpersonal and project management skills help them coordinate feedback and keep the project on track, even when working remotely or with distributed teams.

Job description

Mindrift is looking for a highly skilled Brand Designer to join the Tendem project (**https://tendem.ai/**) and create strong visual identities for real-world brands and products. In this role, you'll apply your expertise in brand strategy, visual identity, and design systems to create cohesive, modern, and impactful brand assets. This part-time remote opportunity is ideal for creative professionals with hands-on experience in brand asset creation, visual identity development, and maintaining brand consistency.
What We Do
The Mindrift platform connects specialists with innovative technology projects. Our mission is to help develop high-quality AI technologies by combining real-world expertise from professionals across the globe with advanced AI development efforts.
About the Role
This is a freelance role for a Tendem project. As a Brand Designer, your focus will be on brand asset creation, visual identity, and brand consistency. We need a core specialist dedicated to building a strong visual foundation. You will serve as the architect of the brand identity, modernizing aesthetics and ensuring that all visual touchpoints look cohesive across various mediums using industry-standard design tools.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop foundational brand assets, including logos, complete visual identities, and comprehensive color schemes.
  • Create, systematically organize, and deliver necessary variations of core brand elements.
  • Act as the strict gatekeeper for brand consistency across all internal and external materials, including pitch decks and social media kits.
  • Build scalable, long-lasting visual systems that align with modern design standards.
  • Enforce design quality through cross-platform validation, ensuring brand aesthetics translate flawlessly across both digital and print mediums.

How to get started
Apply, pass qualification(s), and start contributing to projects aligned with your expertise - on your own schedule.
Educational qualifications
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in brand design, graphic design, art direction, or visual communications is desirable.
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communication Design, or related creative fields is a plus.

Academic and/or Professional Experience
Candidates must have a strong portfolio heavily focused on brand identity creation, logo design, and comprehensive brand guidelines. We are looking for specialists with a deep understanding of how core branding translates seamlessly across different digital and print mediums. A strategic, detail-obsessed approach and the ability to work independently to build long-lasting visual systems are essential.
Technical Skills (Essential)
  • Brand Identity Creation: Expertise in building foundational assets from scratch, including scalable logos, distinct color palettes, and typography systems.
  • Design Tools: Deep proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and Figma for crafting and managing core design assets.
  • Cross-Medium Adaptation: Proven ability to translate brand DNA perfectly across varied formats, from digital social media kits to corporate pitch decks and print materials.
  • Brand System Architecture: Strong organizational skills to develop clear brand guidelines, style guides, and structured asset libraries for wider team use.

Additional requirements
  • A strategic, detail-obsessed mindset focused on long-term brand equity.
  • Strong dedication to visual consistency and functioning as a true brand gatekeeper.
  • Self-directed work ethic with the ability to troubleshoot independently and deliver high-quality assets.
  • Portfolio showcasing branding work (logos, identity systems, guidelines) must be included in the CV
  • English proficiency: Upper-intermediate (B2) or above (required)

Project time expectations
For this project, tasks are estimated to require around 10-20 hours per week during active phases, based on project requirements. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed workload, and applies only while the project is active.
Compensation
On this project, contributors can earn up to $50 per hour equivalent, depending on their level and pace of contribution.
Compensation varies across projects depending on scope, complexity, and required expertise. Please note that other projects on the platform may offer different earning levels based on their requirements.
