Founders Marketing focuses on entrepreneurial, startup-driven marketing strategies often led by the company's founder, emphasizing versatility and innovation. In contrast, a Marketing Manager typically operates within a structured corporate environment, managing teams and campaigns. Both roles require marketing knowledge, but Founders Marketing is more hands-on and flexible, suited for startup settings, while Marketing Managers work within established organizational frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Founders Marketing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Founders Marketing, you need a strong grasp of growth strategy, branding, and data-driven decision-making, often supported by experience in early-stage startups or entrepreneurial ventures. Familiarity with digital marketing tools, analytics platforms, and CRM systems is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and exceptional communication skills help differentiate top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for rapidly acquiring customers, building brand awareness, and driving sustainable business growth in dynamic startup environments.

What is Founders Marketing?

Founders Marketing refers to the marketing strategies and activities led or directly influenced by a company’s founders, particularly in the early stages of a startup. This approach leverages the founders’ vision, passion, and unique insights to build brand identity, engage early adopters, and drive initial growth. Founders often act as the face of the company, using their personal networks and storytelling to create buzz and credibility. Founders Marketing is crucial for startups with limited resources, as it can generate organic traction before scaling up traditional marketing efforts.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Founders Marketing when launching a new product or service?

Professionals in Founders Marketing often encounter challenges such as limited resources, establishing brand credibility, and reaching target audiences with a constrained budget. Balancing hands-on execution with strategic planning is common, as founders typically wear multiple hats. Additionally, prioritizing marketing initiatives that deliver the highest return on investment and adapting quickly to market feedback are crucial for success in this fast-paced environment.

Job description

Exa is an applied AI lab building a search engine unlike the world has ever seen. We build massive-scale infrastructure to crawl the web, train state-of-the-art embedding models to understand it, and develop high-performance vector databases to retrieve information from it.
Today, Exa powers search for Cursor, Cognition, HubSpot, and over 400,000 developers, and we've raised $350 million from a16z, Benchmark, and Lightspeed.
Our goal is to build perfect search over all of the world's information, far beyond what traditional search engines can offer. The visual language for this technology and category is still being invented, and you'll help define it.
About the role
We're looking for a Brand Designer with exceptional visual taste and broad creative range to shape Exa's identity across campaigns, launches, website, events, and product marketing.
You'll work closely with the founders, marketing, and product teams to take a project from early concepts to final launch. Alongside the day-to-day design work, we're looking for designers who can bring a unique perspective and opinionated approach to each launch or event.
Designers at Exa have broad creative license, and the freedom to lead new initiatives to express our brand. This role will be a great fit for you if you enjoy moving across different kinds of work without compromising on craft.
What you'll do
  • Work with founders, marketing, product, and design from early concept through launch
  • Develop creative direction across Exa's brand, campaigns, website, events, and product marketing
  • Turn strong visual concepts into cohesive systems that work across different channels
  • Move fluidly across graphic design, motion, illustration, 3D, and web to explore and execute ideas
  • Build reusable templates and brand tools that help teams move quickly without compromising on craft
Example projects
  • Create the visual system for a major product launch, from the hero concept through its campaign rollout
  • Rethink Exa's presence at a major industry event, from the environment and keynote through supporting materials
  • Build a flexible brand toolkit for launches, social, sales, and recurring marketing work
What we're looking for
  • 4+ years working in brand, visual, or multidisciplinary design
  • A portfolio of polished identities, campaigns, and digital experiences
  • Strong typography, composition, art direction, and visual storytelling skills
  • Fluency with Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, and skilled in a combination of graphic design, motion, illustration, 3D, creative coding, or web design
  • Ability to turn strong visual concepts into cohesive systems across different formats
  • High agency to identify opportunities, communicate clearly, and work well through ambiguity
Logistics
  • Location: This is an in-person opportunity in San Francisco.
  • Visas: We're happy to sponsor international candidates (e.g., STEM OPT, OPT, H1B, O1, E3). While we cannot guarantee your visa, we have historically been successful in sponsoring candidates from all over the world. If you receive an offer, our team will work hard to get you a visa.
  • Benefits: We offer premium healthcare benefits (medical, dental, vision), fertility benefits, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all new parents, and a monthly wellness stipend to all of our employees.

Exa is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, creed, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, age, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or related conditions, criminal histories consistent with applicable law, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
