Founder Director information

What is a founder director?

Founder Directors are individuals who have both founded a company and serve on its board of directors. They are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization, making high-level decisions, and ensuring the company adheres to its mission and values. Founder Directors often play a pivotal role in shaping the company's culture and long-term vision, leveraging their entrepreneurial insight to guide the business from inception through growth stages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founder director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founder Director, you need a strong background in business development, strategic planning, leadership, and financial management, generally supported by entrepreneurial experience or a relevant degree. Familiarity with business management software, finance tools, and sometimes project management or industry-specific certifications is common. Visionary thinking, resilience, exceptional communication, and decision-making skills set outstanding Founder Directors apart. These competencies are essential for driving organizational growth, navigating challenges, and effectively leading teams to achieve business objectives.

What are some common challenges founder directors face when transitioning from a startup phase to a scaling business?

Founder Directors often encounter challenges in shifting their focus from hands-on involvement in every aspect of the business to delegating responsibilities and building out leadership teams. As the company grows, they need to implement more structured processes and adapt their management style to support larger teams and more complex operations. Balancing strategic vision with day-to-day execution, while maintaining company culture and employee engagement, can be particularly demanding. Successful Founder Directors are those who prioritize clear communication, invest in leadership development, and remain adaptable as the business evolves.

What is the difference between Founder Director vs Business Development Manager?

The main difference is that a Founder Director is a high-level leadership role often involved in starting and guiding a company, while a Business Development Manager focuses on expanding the company's market presence and sales. Both roles require strategic thinking, but the Founder Director typically has broader responsibilities in company vision and governance.

Job description

Founder in Residence
Department: Studio
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Cambridge
Description
C10 Labs is seeking Founders in Residence (FIRs) to build the next generation of AI-driven healthtech, biotech, and deeptech companies in Cambridge/Boston.
As a Founder in Residence, you will work directly with the C10 Labs team to:
  • Identify and validate high-impact problems in healthcare, biology, and scientific systems
  • Develop and test new venture concepts leveraging AI, data, and emerging technologies
  • Rapidly prototype solutions with access to technical, clinical, and research partners
  • Launch and scale a new company from zero to venture-backed

This is a build-track role designed for individuals who want to found a company but benefit from the infrastructure, capital, and ecosystem of a venture studio at day zero.
  • Source and validate opportunities across healthtech, biotech, and deeptech
  • Work closely with clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to define real-world problems
  • Build and iterate on MVPs using AI/ML, data platforms, and scientific tooling
  • Lead early go-to-market strategy and customer discovery
  • Recruit and build an initial team
  • Position the company for seed/Series A financing

What You Will Do
  • Identify high-impact opportunities where AI can transform major industries
  • Conduct market research, customer discovery, and technical validation
  • Build prototypes, proof-of-concepts, or early product architectures
  • Collaborate with C10 Labs' engineering, product, and venture teams
  • Engage with mentors, researchers, and industry partners in the C10 Labs ecosystem
  • Develop fundraising narratives and investor materials
  • Recruit early team members or co-founders
  • Launch and lead the new company as CEO or co-founder following venture formation

What We Are Looking For
Technical builder or operator with a background in AI, computer science, bioengineering, or related fields
Experience in healthcare, biotech, life sciences, or deeptech environments (startup, lab, or industry)
Founder mindset - you've built, scaled, or operated in early-stage companies
Strong ability to navigate ambiguity and zero-to-one environments
Deep curiosity about applying AI to real-world scientific and healthcare challenges
Bonus: Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in a relevant technical or scientific field
Additional qualities we value:
Strong product intuition and problem discovery skills
  • Technical fluency in AI, machine learning, or data-driven systems
  • Ability to operate in highly ambiguous early-stage environments
  • Experience building teams or leading complex initiatives
  • Ability to translate emerging technology into scalable businesses

Why This Role
Cambridge/Boston is the global epicenter for AI + biotech convergence. This role is an opportunity to build at the intersection of:
  • AI x Biology
  • AI x Healthcare Systems
  • AI x Scientific Discovery

If you're looking to found a company in one of the most important and fastest-growing sectors - with the backing of a venture studio purpose-built for this - this is that opportunity.
