Clariant is currently seeking a Formulation Chemist to join the Lucas Meyer division of the Care Chemicals Business Unit in New Providence, New Jersey. This role provides laboratory-based formulation support for the development, customization, and evaluation of cosmetic formulations across skin care, hair care, sun care, and color cosmetics applications. The Formulation Chemist will support formulation projects by preparing prototypes, conducting laboratory testing, performing stability evaluations, maintaining formulation records, and assisting with technical investigations. Working closely with the Regional Formulation Manager and broader technical team, this position contributes to ingredient promotion initiatives, customer projects, and ongoing formulation development activities within the New Providence laboratory. Responsibilities:
  • Support the development and customization of cosmetic formulations for skin care, hair care, sun care, and color cosmetic applications under the direction of the Regional Formulation Manager.
  • Prepare laboratory batches and prototypes to support formulation development, ingredient evaluations, customer projects, and promotional initiatives.
  • Assist with the evaluation of raw materials, ingredient functionality, processing parameters, and product performance characteristics.
  • Conduct laboratory investigations, formulation troubleshooting, and product optimization activities while documenting observations and results.
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain stability studies in accordance with established procedures, including sample preparation, tracking, and data collection.
  • Maintain accurate formulation records, laboratory notebooks, stability data, and project documentation within designated systems and databases.
  • Support the preparation of prototypes, technical materials, and laboratory demonstrations for internal and external technical activities.
  • Collaborate with formulation scientists, technical teams, and other internal stakeholders to support project objectives and development activities.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, inventory, raw materials, packaging components, and consumables to ensure an organized and efficient laboratory environment.
  • Follow all laboratory safety, quality, and regulatory requirements while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • 3-7 years of hands-on experience in a cosmetic or personal care formulation laboratory developing skin care, hair care, sun care, color cosmetic, or related products.
  • Working knowledge of cosmetic formulation principles, including emulsions, gels, gel-creams, raw material functionality, stability testing, and product evaluation.
  • Strong laboratory, documentation, and organizational skills with the ability to support multiple formulation projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and formulation-related software, along with strong communication and collaboration skills in a team-oriented environment.
