Nut Former Operator

Department: Machine Shop

Position Summary: Operates automatic nut formers that have 5 forming dies and are equipped with automatic feeding mechanisms to precisely sheared to length and progressively form metal wire into dies and special nut products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates nut forming machines.
  • Moves control to cycle machine through settings, stopping the machine and adjusting to positions and machine controls to allow for operating factors such as timing and the clearance between moving parts.
  • Positions and secures heading wire onto stock feeding mechanism.
  • Adjust specific tooling and transfer fingers at each station.
  • Start machine, observes the operation and inspects first run and sample workpiece to ensure machine conforms to specifications.
  • Inspects parts using micrometers, gauges, and other measuring tools, to ensure compliance with specification.
  • Reads blueprint or job order for product specification such as dimensions, tolerance, number or parts to be formed and tooling instruction on type tooling required.
  • Performs record keeping, data entry, housekeeping and following safety regulations.
  • Suggest process improvement ideas.
  • Use the 3 pan system through your production run.
  • Evaluate and communicate machine condition or concerns to both maintenance and supervision.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Working experience in a fastener manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of nut forming machinery and procedures.
  • Ability to inspect parts with variety of inspections instruments. Knowledge in the use of SPC.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

Mathematical skills: Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts and calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, angles, radius, ratios and standard units of measurements.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
