THE POSITION

As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator for the Department of Corrections, you will help keep vital systems functioning smoothly at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Forest. This role lets you work with large mechanical equipment and learn valuable technical skills. You will support safety, reliability, and teamwork in a unique environment. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role helps operate and maintain the boiler plant while supervising an inmate work crew to support safe and efficient facility operations. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Plant Operation: Maintain boilers, chillers, and cooling towers during routine and emergency conditions
  • Equipment Maintenance: Operate and service pumps, fans, and control systems to ensure proper function
  • Water Testing: Test boiler water chemistry and track chemical inventories and logs
  • Crew Supervision: Oversee inmate workers and ensure safety, tool control, and compliance with regulations
  • Documentation Tasks: Complete required paperwork, inventories, and communications with supervisors
  • General Housekeeping: Clean assigned areas and maintain a safe work environment

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work hours are 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, or 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Sunday - Thursday. Your work hours will be determined at the time of hire.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,925.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
