At Camp Fire Columbia, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to find and pursue their spark- a passion that inspires and drives them to set and achieve goals for their future. Our Summer Camp Program was founded in 1924 and continues to serve youth ages 5-18. During the summer months, we offer overnight summer camp at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century-old trees. Position Overview:ย 

This position is responsible for overseeing the Camp Namanu kitchen, ensuring balanced meals for all persons on site for summer camp, weekend programs, catered rentals, and Outdoor School. Responsibilities include scheduling and supervising seasonal kitchen employees, menu-planning, food ordering within budget, managing kitchen inventory and supply requests, adhering to all food safety standards, meeting with renters or partners ahead of events and rentals, and working with camp leadership to implement policies for staff and campers. This position is also responsible for ensuring that any reported dietary needs and restrictions are safely met. ย 

Requirements

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:ย 

  1. This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that make that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environment by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.ย 
  2. Oversee the day-to-day operations of Camp Namanu kitchen and food services areas including but not limited to supervision and scheduling of kitchen staff, menu implementation, dietary restriction management, regular cleaning, and inventory management. Experience managing food service for 250+ is preferred.ย ย 
  3. Develop and implement staff training for food service employees and volunteers and ensure all health and safety practices are followed by staff and campers in kitchen and dining spaces. Work with Program Director and Rental Manager to inform and train camp staff about their responsibilities when in dining spaces including safety procedures, how to prep their campers, and any protocols to follow.ย 

Job Duties:ย 

  • Display excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, families, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.ย 
  • Work with team to provideย quality options for those with special dietary needs. Develop, record, and maintain standardized recipes and procedures.ย 
  • Monitor food preparation methods, portion sizes, and the overall presentation of food.ย 
  • Maintain adequate inventory, and ensure the rotation and timely use of kitchen supplies.ย 
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation of nutritious meals for youth, staff, and guests throughout summer programming, Outdoor School, and rental seasons.ย 
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of kitchen and food service areas and comply with health and food safety standards and regulations.ย 
  • Work with Property Director and/or Rental Manager to maintain food service equipment and supplies.ย 
  • Maintain staff performance record including any required evaluations, performance issue documentation, and other records as needed.ย ย 
  • Other duties as assigned.ย 

Expectations for All Camp Staff:ย 

  • Abide and apply the personnel and program policies of the camp.ย 
  • Ensure and maintain the cleanliness of camp facilities, equipment, grounds, weekly and end-of-summer cleaning and pack-up. ย ย 
  • Observe good health habits, including sufficient sleep, good hygiene, reasonable eating habits and cooperation with the Medical Staff and Program Director in case of illness.ย 
  • Maintain punctual, regular and predictable attendance.ย Communicate ahead of time about schedule conflicts or changes.ย 
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.ย 
  • Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.ย 
  • Support the mission, purpose and leadership of Camp Fire and projects a positive image of Camp Fire.ย 
  • Follow all safety guidelines including the completion of accident/incident reports as needed. ย 
  • Other duties as assigned.ย 

Supervisory Responsibilities:ย 

Directly supervises seasonal kitchen team included but not limited to: Assistant Kitchen Manager, Senior Cooks, Cooks, Kitchen Assistants, and any Interns. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.ย
