TheSite Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)Will be responsible for observing work activities, Implementing, executing, and overseeing Spencer Construction's occupational safety compliance program under the supervision of the Corporate Safety Director.This position requires that the incumbent be able to travel 85% - 95% of the time to the various project sites.
Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs safety training on various project sites in accordance with 29CFR 1910, 1926 OSHA's General Industry Standards, other nationally recognized compliance standards or manufacturer's equipment guidelines which may include administering hands on training and skills testing.
  • Conducts incident investigations by determining the nature and cause of injury, illness, or accidents and making recommendations for correction of deficiencies and/or corrective action plans in accordance with associated rules, regulations, or company policy.
  • Obtains mandated certifications when relevant to company projects and/or functions by attending training sessions and seminars to keep current on regulations as they pertain to safety and health, to include new ideas and techniques in accident prevention, loss control, and compliance based safety programs as they relate to 29CFR 1910, 1926 OSHA's General Industry Standards, other nationally recognized compliance standards or manufacturer's equipment guidelines.
  • Serves as liaison for with Human Resources on safety related matters by conducting safety and work practice observations and studies, recommending and implementing changes to improve employee safety, and developing procedures in consultation with the Safety Manager.
  • Develops and performs safety compliance inspections by conducting vehicle inspections to ensure D.O.T. compliance and conducting project/ facility inspections to ensure OSHA compliance. Coordinates with the Safety Manager to attend meetings/classes to keep current of safety related issues, training classes or new techniques.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Train and coach employees in safety and safety standards
  • Identify hazards and provide corrective action recommendations to management
  • Track near misses, incidents and type reports to management and contractors
  • Provide input into the company's overall health and safety programs
  • Recognize trends and assist in the development of techniques to mitigate incident trends
  • Provide input to management to address leading and lagging indicators
  • Attend meetings with owner, general contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Must be able to work as a positive team member by providing viable solutions to obstacles while maintaining integrity in the obligations to the contract documents.
  • Ability to work on our different sites in various states.
  • Comply, understand, and support Spencer Construction safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment.

  • Ability and willingness to abide by Spencer Construction polices and handbook.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Associate degree Occupational safety and Health or related field
  • Must have 10 years' experience in a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) position
  • Experience on two or more federal design-build projects valued at $10M
  • Experience working on multiple projects at once and managing time appropriately

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT


This position operates at professional construction sites, requiring the ability to communicate with verbally others on site, in person and over the telephone, ability to read printed materials, signs and directions, stamina to maintain attention despite interruptions, ability to lift, push, pull, carry, handle or feel objects, supplies, tools, machinery and/or controls weighing up to 50 pounds and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and/or ladders; balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift overhead, traverse around or otherwise position one's self around the required work and safety requirements to navigating and perform activities on various construction sites in a safe manner.
Will be required to work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment and other tools within local, state and federal safety guidelines.
This position operates in a professional field environment. The position requires working outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
While working, the employee might be exposed to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, virus or other air-borne pathogens, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.
