Job description

Position Summary

The Salvation Army Minneapolis Parkview Corps is committed to "Doing the Most Good" by providing holistic, person-centered services to individuals and families. Through worship services and pastoral care, alongside social services, the Corps supports the spiritual and practical needs of the community. Services include short- and long-term case management; food, clothing, utility, rent, and housing assistance; shelter and housing programs; and connections to community resources.

The Food Pantry Assistant is a temporary position responsible for supporting the daily operations of the food shelf by receiving, organizing, storing, and distributing food and other donated items. The Assistant maintains inventory, ensures compliance with food safety and sanitation standards, assists volunteers, and provides courteous, person-centered service to participants while helping ensure efficient and effective food pantry operations.

$16.56 - $18 per hour, 9 hours a week

Essential Functions (approximate time spent)

  • Food Distribution & Participant Services (35%): Prepare and distribute food boxes and grocery items to participants while providing courteous, respectful, and person-centered customer service.
  • Food Pantry Operations & Compliance (25%): Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and safety of the food pantry while ensuring compliance with health department, food bank, and Salvation Army standards.
  • Inventory & Food Management (15%): Receive, inspect, organize, rotate, and appropriately store food donations and other gifts-in-kind while maintaining accurate inventory and distribution records.
  • Volunteer & Team Support (10%): Assist with the training, coordination, and daily support of volunteers and collaborate with Social Services staff to ensure efficient pantry operations.
  • Administrative Responsibilities (10%): Maintain accurate documentation of food inventory, distributions, and related program activities using established databases and recordkeeping systems.
  • Seasonal & Special Projects (5%): Assist with seasonal programs, food drives, special events, and other duties that support Corps and community services.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in food service, food pantry operations, warehouse, inventory, customer service, or a related environment preferred.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Working Conditions

  • Regular interaction with participants, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
  • Frequent handling and movement of food products, donations, and supplies.
