Fmea Engineer information

What is an FMEA engineer?

An FMEA Engineer is a professional who specializes in conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) within manufacturing, engineering, or product design teams. Their main responsibility is to systematically evaluate processes or products to identify potential failure modes, assess their impact, and prioritize corrective actions to mitigate risks. FMEA Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams to improve reliability, safety, and quality standards by proactively addressing weaknesses before issues arise. Their work is crucial in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and healthcare, where product safety and reliability are critical.

How does an FMEA engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the risk assessment process?

As an FMEA Engineer, you will work closely with teams from design, manufacturing, quality, and sometimes suppliers to systematically identify and evaluate potential failure modes in products or processes. Effective collaboration is essential, as you’ll facilitate FMEA sessions, gather input from subject matter experts, and ensure that all relevant perspectives are considered. This teamwork helps to create robust mitigation strategies and action plans, making communication and coordination core parts of your daily responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FMEA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FMEA Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, risk analysis, and quality management, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in process improvement. Familiarity with technical tools like FMEA software (such as APIS IQ-FMEA or PTC Windchill), statistical analysis programs, and quality standards like ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and present findings clearly. These skills and qualifications are essential for proactively identifying and mitigating risks, ensuring product reliability, and maintaining high quality standards in manufacturing or design processes.

What is the difference between Fmea Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

AspectFmea EngineerQuality Engineer
CertificationsISO 13485, Six Sigma, ASQ certificationsISO 9001, Six Sigma, ASQ certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, automotive, aerospaceManufacturing, software, healthcare
Primary FocusFailure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)Overall quality management and process improvement

Fmea Engineers specialize in conducting FMEA to identify potential failures and improve product reliability, often working closely with design and manufacturing teams. Quality Engineers have a broader role in overseeing quality systems, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives. While both roles require similar certifications and often operate within manufacturing industries, Fmea Engineers focus specifically on failure analysis, whereas Quality Engineers manage overall quality assurance processes.

Through advanced materials processing and precision manufacturing capabilities, Elmet delivers high-performance solutions for some of the world's most demanding applications. As we continue to invest in operational excellence, we are expanding our Reliability Engineering team to improve equipment performance, reduce downtime, and support world-class manufacturing across our facilities.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Corporate Reliability Engineer to join our team in Euclid, Ohio.

This newly created position will lead the development and implementation of reliability-centered maintenance strategies across our manufacturing operations. The Corporate Reliability Engineer will partner with Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, and Continuous Improvement teams to transition the organization from reactive maintenance to proactive asset management, improving equipment reliability, reducing maintenance costs, and maximizing production uptime.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineering professional who enjoys solving complex equipment challenges, driving continuous improvement, and making a measurable impact across multiple manufacturing facilities.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) strategies to improve equipment performance and reduce unplanned downtime
  • Analyze equipment failures using root cause analysis (RCA), FMEA, and predictive maintenance techniques to eliminate recurring issues
  • Lead reliability improvement projects across manufacturing operations, including critical equipment upgrades and maintenance optimization
  • Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs to improve asset life and operational performance
  • Partner with Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, and Continuous Improvement teams to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE)
  • Analyze maintenance data, KPIs, and equipment trends to identify improvement opportunities and prioritize capital investments
  • Support new equipment installations by incorporating reliability best practices into equipment design and commissioning
  • Develop maintenance standards, documentation, and reliability metrics while promoting a culture of continuous improvement

What Success Looks Like

  • Significant reduction in equipment failures and unplanned downtime
  • Improved equipment reliability and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE)
  • Successful implementation of proactive maintenance strategies across multiple facilities
  • Reduced maintenance costs through data-driven reliability improvements
  • Strong collaboration between Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations teams
  • Sustainable improvements in manufacturing performance and asset reliability

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or Reliability Engineering required
  • 5+ years of experience in reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, or industrial manufacturing preferred
  • Experience implementing preventive, predictive, or reliability-centered maintenance programs
  • Strong knowledge of root cause analysis, FMEA, vibration analysis, thermography, lubrication, or other predictive maintenance methodologies
  • Experience with CMMS systems, maintenance KPIs, and asset management best practices
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement principles
  • Excellent analytical, project management, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30% to support multiple manufacturing locations

Why Join Elmet Technologies

  • Build and lead a newly created reliability engineering function with company-wide impact
  • Help transform maintenance operations from reactive repairs to proactive reliability strategies
  • Work with advanced manufacturing technologies supporting aerospace, defense, semiconductor, and energy industries
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement leaders across multiple facilities
  • Competitive salary: $110,000–$130,000 annually
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, paid time off, holidays, and professional development opportunities
