What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) worker, you typically need relevant trade qualifications or certifications, strong technical or operational skills, and a good level of physical fitness. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, safety systems, and compliance with occupational health and safety standards is crucial. Standout FIFO workers demonstrate resilience, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication, especially given the remote and challenging environments. These skills ensure safe, efficient job performance and help maintain well-being and productivity during extended periods away from home.

What are some common challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) workers, and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often face challenges such as extended periods away from family, adjusting to shift work schedules, and adapting to remote or isolated work environments. Managing these challenges involves maintaining strong communication with loved ones, establishing healthy routines for sleep and exercise, and utilizing onsite resources like counseling or recreational facilities. Employers typically offer support programs and wellness initiatives to help staff adjust and stay connected, so taking advantage of these services can make the FIFO lifestyle more sustainable and rewarding.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs are positions where employees travel to remote work sites, such as mines or oil rigs, for a set period and then return home for a period of leave. This arrangement is common in industries where the work site is far from major population centers. Employees typically fly to the site, live there while working their shifts, and then fly home for their days off. FIFO jobs often have rotating rosters, such as two weeks on and one week off, and can offer high pay but may require extended time away from family. The lifestyle and work conditions can be challenging, but many find the schedule and compensation appealing.

Job description

Overview

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (NATIONWIDE SEARCH) - A dynamic, accomplished family in San Francisco's vibrant Mission District is seeking 2 extraordinary ROTATIONAL NANNIES to provide exceptional, devoted care for their 10-week-old daughter. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for truly elite caregivers who are not just experienced with newborns, but genuinely passionate about them. If babies are your calling and infant development is your craft, this role was made for you.

Both parents work in tech on a hybrid schedule, and extended family is frequently present in the home, creating a warm, connected environment for the right person to step into. The family is looking for someone who brings seasoned expertise, a proactive mindset, and the kind of deep enthusiasm for infant care that shows up in everything they do.

The schedule is 14 days on/14 days off, working 24/7 on with flexibility for occasional domestic travel. The family would love a team of nannies who are excited to take their daughter out into the world, whether that means a morning at the park, a library storytime, a swim class, or simply exploring the incredible city right outside their door. Adventure and intention go hand in hand in this household. This is NOT a fly-in/out role. The family would assist in relocation to the Bay Area for those not local.

The ideal candidate will bring substantial newborn and infant care experience, a strong foundation in child development, and a track record of long-term placements with discerning families. Experience with high-profile or privacy-conscious households is a significant plus, as is comfort navigating a home where grandparents and family members are occasionally present. This family is thoughtful and engaged, and they are looking for a true partner in care, not simply someone to fill a seat.

Beyond primary childcare, this role includes light cooking for the family, children's laundry, light household assistance, errand running, and driving the baby in the family's vehicle. When the baby is settled and downtime arises, the family welcomes a proactive presence, someone who might research developmental classes, coordinate appointments, or bring fresh ideas to the table. A candidate who has only worked in fully staffed households where duties are highly compartmentalized may find the expectations here a better fit with some flexibility of spirit.

The family has a cat, so comfort with pets is essential. Vaccination requirements are non-negotiable: all candidates must be current on TDAP, flu, COVID, and COVID booster before hire. Candidates who speak Hindi are especially encouraged to apply.

While local San Francisco candidates are strongly encouraged, the family is open to relocation assistance for an exceptional match. This is a long-term placement, and the family is committed to building a lasting, trusting relationship with the right person. This position offers $120k+ gross annually via payroll + industry-standard Rota PTO + Sick Days. The family is ready to move quickly and eager to welcome someone who will love their daughter as thoughtfully and fiercely as they do.
