Fly In Fly Out Millwright information

What is a fly in fly out millwright?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Millwright is a skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, and repairs industrial machinery in remote locations. These jobs typically involve working in mining, oil and gas, or large-scale construction sites where employees are flown in for scheduled shifts and flown out for time off. FIFO millwrights work on rotating schedules, such as two weeks on and two weeks off, providing reliable machinery operation in challenging environments. This role requires mechanical expertise, troubleshooting skills, and adaptability to varying work conditions.

What is the typical work schedule and living arrangement for a fly in fly out millwright?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Millwrights commonly work on rotational schedules, such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, depending on the employer and project needs. Accommodation is usually provided in camp settings near the job site, offering meals and basic amenities to support employees during their shifts. This arrangement allows Millwrights to focus on their specialized maintenance and repair tasks while away from home, and fosters a team-oriented work environment with other skilled tradespeople. Being prepared for extended stays in remote locations is important, and many people appreciate the work-life balance this schedule can provide. FIFO roles can also offer unique opportunities for overtime pay and exposure to large-scale industrial projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fly in fly out millwright?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Millwright, you need strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and experience with industrial maintenance, often supported by a trade certification or journeyman status. Familiarity with precision tools, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is typically required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication skills are essential for working in remote sites and coordinating with diverse teams. These skills are vital for ensuring equipment reliability and safety in challenging, fast-paced environments where independent problem-solving is often necessary.

Job description

OCL GROUP
OCL Industrial Services Ltd.

ABOUT THE ROLE
OCL Industrial Services is looking for skilled Millwrights to join our precision field crews on industrial installation, overhaul, maintenance, and turnaround projects. You will perform hands-on mechanical work with a strong focus on epoxy grouting of equipment baseplates and foundations and precision laser shaft alignment of rotating equipment, working to tight tolerances and high-quality standards.
We are hiring for both full-time permanent positions and project / T&M assignments — please tell us which you are interested in.
Must-have experience for this role
▪  Epoxy grout — mixing, forming, placing, and documentation of grout pours for equipment baseplates and foundations.
▪  Precision laser alignment — laser shaft alignment of rotating equipment, with the ability to record and interpret alignment data.
Location:  Western Canada — site-based (fly-in / drive-in project and turnaround sites)
Employment Type:  Full-time permanent and project / Time-and-Material (T&M) engagements
Schedule:  Day shift, rotational and shutdown / turnaround rotations as required

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform epoxy grouting of equipment baseplates and foundations — surface preparation, forming / formwork, mixing to correct ratios, placing, and finishing.
  • Complete grout documentation accurately — batch / lot numbers, temperatures, volumes, pour logs, and QC sign-offs for the turnover package.
  • Carry out precision laser shaft alignment of pumps, gearboxes, motors, fans, and drive trains; check soft-foot and runout and record final alignment results.
  • Set, install, remove, and overhaul rotating and fixed equipment — pumps, gearboxes, compressors, exchangers, conveyors, and packaged skids.
  • Assist with rigging, lifting, and equipment-setting tasks safely and to plan.
  • Use precision measurement tools — dial indicators, micrometers, feeler gauges, and laser alignment systems.
  • Participate in JSAs / FLHAs, toolbox talks, and all OCL and site HSE requirements, maintaining a clean and safe work area.
  • Report daily time and material information (LEM inputs) and quality records to your supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Required — Interprovincial Red Seal / Journeyman Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), or a senior apprentice with strong relevant experience.
  • Required — hands-on epoxy grout experience: mixing, forming, placing, and documentation of grout pours.
  • Required — precision laser alignment experience (laser shaft alignment), able to record and interpret alignment data.
  • Required — experience with equipment installation, overhaul, and precision maintenance in an industrial setting.
  • Required — competent in rigging and the safe use of precision measuring and alignment tools.
  • Asset — current safety tickets (CSTS / PST, Fall Protection, Confined Space, WHMIS, First Aid) and a valid driver’s licence.
  • Asset — turnaround / shutdown, oil & gas / heavy industrial / mining experience; able to read mechanical drawings and equipment manuals.
WHAT WE OFFER
  • Competitive wages, LOA / subsistence and travel for site work, and premiums for turnaround / shutdown rotations.
  • Steady work across a strong project pipeline with a safety-first, quality-focused team.
  • The choice of full-time permanent employment or project / T&M engagements.
