What is a fly in and fly out job?

Fly In and Fly Out (FIFO) jobs are roles where employees travel to remote work sites, such as mines or oil rigs, for a set period before flying back home for time off. This work arrangement is common in industries located far from populated areas, where daily commuting is impractical. FIFO allows companies to access skilled labor while enabling workers to maintain their home life in other locations. Typical schedules involve working for several weeks on-site followed by a similar period off.

What are common challenges faced by fly in and fly out workers, and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often encounter challenges such as adjusting to extended periods away from home, maintaining work-life balance, and managing fatigue due to shift work. Many companies support their FIFO staff by providing mental health resources, comfortable accommodation, and structured rosters to allow for adequate rest. Building strong communication routines with family and staying engaged in onsite social activities can also help workers stay connected and maintain their well-being while on rotation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fly in and fly out worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) worker, you generally need relevant trade or industry qualifications, strong physical fitness, and experience in remote or industrial environments. Familiarity with site-specific safety protocols, machinery, and compliance certifications such as White Card or mining inductions are typically required. Resilience, adaptability, and strong teamwork and communication skills are essential soft skills for managing the unique challenges of remote work. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining high performance, safety, and well-being in demanding and isolated FIFO environments.

Department: Director of Procurement and Vendor Management

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Austin, TX

Description

SKILLBRIDGE to FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

We're looking for a Director of Procurement & Vendor Management to build and scale the procurement function across Overwatch.

This is a hands‑on role responsible for establishing and leading the company's procurement function, including strategic sourcing, purchasing, vendor management, contract lifecycle management, and procurement governance.

You’ll oversee the acquisition and lifecycle management of all third‑party goods and services, including software, hardware, equipment, furniture, facilities, professional services, and operational vendors, while building the processes, controls, and partnerships that enable the business to scale efficiently.

This role requires strong ownership, a bias toward action, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with day‑to‑day execution. You’ll partner closely with leaders across Finance, Technology, Legal, Safety, Administration, Operations, and other business functions to ensure purchasing decisions maximize value, minimize risk, and support Overwatch’s long‑term growth.

This is a unique opportunity to build a best‑in‑class procurement function from the ground up and play a key role in shaping the operational foundation that enables Overwatch to scale.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Procurement Operations

  • Own the procurement lifecycle from request through sourcing, purchasing, contracting, vendor onboarding, renewal, and offboarding.
  • Procure software, hardware, technology, equipment, furniture, office supplies, facilities services, professional services, and other enterprise purchases.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand purchasing requirements and develop sourcing strategies.
  • Lead RFPs, RFIs, competitive bidding, and vendor evaluations.
  • Negotiate pricing, commercial terms, service agreements, and renewals.
  • Partner with Finance and business leaders to ensure purchases align with procurement policies, budgets, forecasts, and approval requirements.

Build Procurement Programs & Governance

  • Design and implement procurement policies, approval workflows, and purchasing standards.
  • Develop enterprise‑wide procurement governance that balances operational efficiency with financial controls.
  • Build standardized sourcing, contracting, and vendor management processes.
  • Create procurement dashboards, spend analytics, contract reporting, and executive KPIs that provide visibility into enterprise purchasing and vendor performance.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, vendor consolidation, and process improvements.
  • Continuously improve procurement operations as the company scales.
  • Implement and optimize procurement systems, tools, and workflows to improve visibility, efficiency, governance, and the overall employee purchasing experience.
  • Prepare procurement updates, savings initiatives, vendor insights, and key metrics for executive leadership.
  • Develop and manage preferred vendor programs and enterprise purchasing standards.

Vendor & Contract Management

  • Own enterprise vendor relationships throughout the supplier lifecycle.
  • Maintain strategic partnerships with key vendors and service providers.
  • Manage contract negotiations in partnership with Legal.
  • Maintain the enterprise contract repository, renewal calendar, and vendor documentation.
  • Develop vendor scorecards, performance metrics, and quarterly business reviews for strategic suppliers.
  • Lead vendor performance management and issue resolution.

Vendor Compliance & Risk

  • Manage vendor onboarding and due diligence.
  • Ensure vendors maintain required documentation, including Certificates of Insurance (COIs), W‑9s, certifications, and other required business documentation.
  • Partner with technology team on software licensing, security reviews, and technology vendor assessments.
  • Partner with Safety on contractor qualification and site compliance requirements.
  • Partner with Finance on payment terms, purchasing controls, and spend governance.
  • Track vendor compliance, contract obligations, renewal milestones, and procurement risk.

Partner Across the Business

  • Collaborate with Finance on purchasing controls and spend management.
  • Partner with Legal on contract review and negotiation.
  • Work closely with Technology on software procurement and technology vendors.
  • Support Operations teams with sourcing for field and corporate locations.
  • Build trusted partnerships while delivering an exceptional internal customer experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

What We're Looking For:

  • 7–10+ years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, vendor management, supply chain, or purchasing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Finance, Operations, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience building or improving procurement processes, governance, and operational controls.
  • Demonstrated success negotiating commercial agreements and managing strategic vendor relationships.
  • Experience managing contract lifecycle processes and vendor performance.
  • Strong understanding of procurement best practices, purchasing policies, and contract administration.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders across multiple business functions.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to balance strategic thinking and hands‑on execution.
  • Demonstrated success operating in fast‑paced, high‑growth environments with the ability to bring structure, governance, and operational discipline where processes are still evolving.
  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence decision‑making across executive and cross‑functional stakeholders.
Benefits

Competitive salary and benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off, and relocation assistance available.
