What is a fly in fly out offshore job?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Offshore jobs refer to positions where employees are flown to remote offshore locations, such as oil rigs or mining sites, to work for a set period (often several weeks), followed by a period of leave at home. This rotation allows workers to live at home when not on shift, rather than relocating permanently. FIFO offshore roles can include engineers, operators, medics, chefs, and more. These jobs often require long hours and extended time away from family, but they typically offer competitive salaries and benefits due to the remote and demanding nature of the work.

What are the typical work schedules and living conditions for fly in fly out offshore roles?

FIFO offshore roles usually operate on a rotational schedule, such as two weeks on and two weeks off, though variations exist depending on the employer and project location. While on site, employees live in purpose-built accommodations that provide meals, laundry, and recreational facilities. The work environment is highly structured, with long shifts and strict safety protocols, but there are ample opportunities to build camaraderie among team members. Many find the extended time off between rotations to be a significant perk, while others may find the remote living conditions and time away from family challenging.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fly in fly out offshore worker?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Offshore worker, you generally need specialized technical skills relevant to your trade (such as drilling, engineering, or rig operations), relevant safety certifications (like BOSIET or HUET), and a strong physical fitness level. Familiarity with offshore safety protocols, heavy machinery, and digital reporting systems is often required. Adaptability, teamwork, and resilience are essential soft skills due to the unique challenges of remote and extended shifts. These skills and certifications are vital to ensure operational safety, efficiency, and well-being in high-risk, isolated offshore environments.

What is the difference between Fly In Fly Out Offshore vs Fly In Fly Out Onshore?

Job description

AUSTIN, TX (OPEN TO FLY-IN/FLY-OUT) โ€“ Prominent UHNW Family Seeking Exceptional Full-Time ROTA Nanny

A warm, respectful, and fully staffed UHNW family based in Austin, Texas is seeking an experienced, engaging, and highly professional Full-Time ROTA Nanny to join their childcare team. This position will primarily focus on the family's 13-month-old son, while working collaboratively with a second full-time ROTA nanny whose primary responsibility is their almost 3-year-old daughter. Together, the two nannies will provide seamless, team-oriented support, ensuring both children receive exceptional, individualized care while maintaining consistency in routines and developmental goals.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned career nanny with a strong background in infant and toddler development and a genuine passion for helping young children learn through play, exploration, and meaningful engagement. The family is seeking someone who enjoys an active lifestyle and loves spending time outdoorsโ€”whether that's swimming, going for walks, visiting parks, or creating fun, enriching experiences that encourage curiosity and healthy development. A calm, nurturing demeanor, exceptional emotional intelligence, and the ability to anticipate the needs of both the children and the household are essential. Candidates should be polished, discreet, collaborative, and thrive working as part of a fully staffed household. A college degree or background in Early Childhood Education (or a related field) is highly preferred. Mandarin-speaking candidates would be considered an ideal fit, though fluency is not required.

This position follows a two-weeks-on / two-weeks-off ROTA schedule, which is a firm requirement. During working rotations, the nanny will reside in the family's home with a private bedroom and bathroom. While the family is open to fly-in/fly-out candidates, preference will be given to candidates who are already based in the Austin area and able to live out during their two weeks off.

The family travels frequently throughout the United States and internationally, so candidates must enjoy travel and be comfortable maintaining routines while away from home. They are looking for someone who is proactive, organized, adaptable, and committed to building a long-term relationship with their family.

The position offers an outstanding compensation package, comprehensive benefits, paid time off, and flights for rotational travel when applicable. This is an exceptional opportunity for a polished, career nanny seeking a long-term role with a kind, appreciative, and respectful UHNW family where collaboration, professionalism, and longevity are truly valued.
