Job Title:                    Intern

Department:              Golf Course Maintenance

Reports To:                Superintendent

FLSA Status:             Hourly

 

Summary:

Ability to maintain & operate, in a safe & efficient manner, the following equipment including: utility vehicles, fly mowers, weed eaters, hand tools, walking greens mower, sod cutter and mechanical edger.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

In addition to the following duties and responsibilities, other duties may be assigned:

  • Heavy equipment operation
  • Transporting materials and debris with dump trucks
  • Miscellaneous special projects using such equipment as the backhoe and box blade
  • Using a mechanized trencher to excavate below ground lines for drainage, irrigation or conduit
  • Assist irrigation technician and/or chemical technician
  • Changing cups/tee markers
  • Mowing tees, approaches and collars
  • Mowing fairways
  • Mechanized triplex trim mowing
  • Sweeping roughs, fairways, etc.
  • Mowing roughs with rotary mower and tractor
  • Mowing greens with walking greens mower
  • Mowing lake banks, trap edges and other areas with fly mowers
  • Gathering debris: which includes limbs, leaves, small sticks, etc.
  • Using a weed eater to trim around trees, etc.
  • Repairing tee and fairway divots
  • Cleaning shop according to the designated schedule
  • Mechanical removal of weeds
  • Load or transport 50 lb. fertilizer or seed bags
  • Sod removal, sod laying, and grass sprigging
  • Top dress greens and tees
  • Trap raking (hand & mechanized)
  • Cart path edging
  • Repairing ball marks on greens
  • Performs related tasks as required
  • Fertilize, verti-cut and aerify greens, tees, fairways and roughs
  • Must be able to use heavy and/or specialized equipment with skill and safety
  • Must change cups accurately, at the proper consistent depth, using the cup setter, at a desired and proper location on the green.
  • Must ensure that all reels are cutting properly at all times
  • Must maintain and operate all equipment in safe, efficient manner
  • Must clean all equipment
  • Must wear uniforms properly
  • Must report any machine malfunction to golf course mechanic or supervisor
  • Assist in keeping a clean, safe shop and work environment
  • Frequently rechecks daily schedule
  • Must check fuel and oil levels before leaving shop
  • Must fuel equipment up at the end of each use
  • Must warm engines up for 1 minute prior to use and must throttle engine down for 1 minute prior to shut down
  • Must exercise proper etiquette around members and guest on the golf course
  • Must maintain an excellent job attendance record
  • Role model for Greenkeepers 1, 2 & 3

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision of small work forces at times may be required.

Qualifications:

  • Playing knowledge of the game preferred but not required
  • Works on diverse range of activities involved in golf course maintenance and reconstruction
  • Operates motorized equipment, trucks, gang mowers, tractor drawn mowers, dump trucks, front end loader/backhoes, mechanized trenchers, box blade, soil floating devises, sprigging machine, etc.
  • Familiar with understands company policy.

Education and/or Experience:

High School education required. Currently enrolled in a turf grass program.

Language:

English required. Bilingual skills preferred but not required.

Attendance, Appearance and Conduct:

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Ocean Reef Club from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position.  Associates with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry and report deadlines, associate may be required to work varying schedules to meet the business needs of the Club and report deadlines.

Proper grooming is required by all associates and is described in detail in the Associates Handbook. Associates should review this policy and make sure that at all times they present themselves for shifts looking clean, neat and professional. 

As a condition of employment, all associates agree to fully comply with Ocean Reef Club rules and regulations for the safe and efficient operation of Club facilities. Associates who violate Club rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
