What is a FLRAA?

FLRAA stands for Future Long Range Assault Aircraft, a program initiated by the U.S. Army to develop the next generation of long-range assault helicopters. The FLRAA is designed to replace the aging UH-60 Black Hawk fleet, offering improved speed, range, payload, and survivability. The goal is to provide advanced capabilities for troop transport, medical evacuation, and other critical missions. Companies like Bell and Sikorsky-Boeing have submitted competing designs for this project. The FLRAA program is a key part of the Army's modernization efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FLRAA pilot, and why are they important?

To excel as a FLRAA Pilot, you need advanced piloting skills, in-depth knowledge of rotary-wing aircraft systems, and typically a military flight qualification. Familiarity with advanced avionics, flight simulators, and mission planning software is essential. Strong decision-making, situational awareness, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring mission success, safety, and coordination in complex operational environments.

What is the difference between Flraa vs Data Analyst?

AspectFlraaData Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically requires a certification in data analysis or related fieldOften requires a bachelor's degree in statistics, data science, or related field
Work EnvironmentUsually works in tech companies, startups, or data-driven organizationsWorks across various industries including finance, healthcare, marketing, often in office settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in companies focusing on data management, analytics, and software solutionsCommon in industries requiring data interpretation and reporting

While both Flraa and Data Analyst roles involve working with data, Flraa may focus more on specific data management tools and software, whereas Data Analysts typically analyze and interpret data to support business decisions. The roles often overlap, but the key difference lies in their primary focus and required certifications.

Job description

Job Description

AMA provides technical support to the U.S. Army’s Technology Development Directorate (TDD) at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. This work supports the development, application, and advancement of high‑fidelity modeling and simulation tools used in Army rotorcraft acquisition programs, both Future Vertical Lift (FVL) and enduring fleet upgrades.

Overview

The Flight‑Dynamics Modeling and Simulation Engineer will support Army rotorcraft engineering efforts through the development, improvement, and application of flight‑dynamics models for both enduring fleet and future vertical lift, including models needed for real‑time piloted simulations on NASA’s Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) and for advanced uncrewed rotorcraft configurations. The position is located at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama.

Responsibilities
  • Develop flight‑dynamics models of modern vertical take‑off and landing (VTOL) aircraft configurations, both crewed and uncrewed.
  • Provide flight‑dynamics modeling support to the Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) program office.
  • Participate in FLRAA design reviews and keep abreast of flight‑dynamics modeling needs for the FLRAA aircraft.
  • Support the development, updating, and validation of both generic and specific physics‑based models of the FLRAA tilt‑rotor.
  • Develop proficiency with the HeliUM comprehensive modeling tool to enable the implementation of updates and enhancements needed to generate high‑order linear models of advanced crewed and uncrewed vertical lift configurations.
  • Develop proficiency with frequency‑domain system identification techniques using CIFER needed to develop accurate linear models of modern and enduring configurations.
  • Support an effort to develop a component‑type model of the UH‑60M based on an existing model of the UH‑60A.
  • Support the assessment and selection of the software development environment needed, plan and implement source code modifications, and conduct subsequent validation testing using flight data.
  • Attend technical group meetings, branch meetings, design reviews, etc., and report project updates and activities.
  • Communicate research results through technical presentations and written reports.
Required Qualifications
  • MS or PhD (preferred) in Aeronautics or Aerospace Engineering with experience in rotorcraft flight‑dynamics modeling as part of research projects and activities (not coursework alone) is required.
  • A candidate with a BS degree having had direct research experience with the cited areas below will be considered.
  • Direct research experience with flight‑dynamics models such as HeliUM, GenHel, FORECAST, or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Direct research experience with frequency‑domain system identification for linear model development using tools such as CIFER is highly desirable.
  • Education or relevant experience in rotorcraft real‑time simulation; system modeling using Simulink.
  • Software skills desirable: FORTRAN, C, MATLAB, Simulink.
  • This position requires U.S. Citizenship.
Benefits

Pay for this position is approximately $100,000 - $135,000 per year, commensurate with experience, and includes a competitive benefits package.
