This role is ideal for individuals seeking part-time or freelance work while maintaining control over their workload. Responsibilities typically include lesson planning, academic guidance, and adapting teaching methods to students' needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Flexible Tutor position, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Flexible Tutor, a strong educational background in the subject area, tutoring or teaching experience, and the ability to adapt to diverse learning needs are essential. Familiarity with online learning platforms, video conferencing tools, and digital educational resources is often required, along with any relevant teaching certifications. Excellent communication, patience, and time-management skills help tutors connect with students and customize instruction dynamically. These abilities ensure that tutors can effectively support learners in varying environments and schedules, meeting each individual's academic goals.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a Flexible Tutor?

As a Flexible Tutor, your work schedule is often determined by student demand and your own availability, making it possible to balance tutoring with other commitments. Sessions may take place in person or online, during weekdays, evenings, or weekends, depending on students' needs. This flexibility is ideal for those seeking supplementary income or a non-traditional work structure. However, it may require strong organizational skills and clear communication with students or their families to coordinate and adapt to changing session times. Many tutors find this arrangement rewarding for the autonomy and variety it offers in daily work.

Job description

If you can read, you can be a reading tutor! We are always looking for people who can impart the gift of literacy to adult learners. Many of our students are seeking their GED or just want to increase their reading skills, but all of them benefit from the time and attention of a reading tutor.

We understand the demands of a busy schedule and the importance of balancing obligations. That's why we offer flexible tutoring options designed to fit seamlessly into your life. We work closely with you to find the best time and place for your tutoring sessions. We have daytime availability as well as flexible evening and weekend hours at the Literacy Center. Tutors and students are also welcome to choose a different location if that better suits their needs.

Tutors can work one-on-one with students or run a small group for students with similar needs.

We provide training and materials to empower both the tutor and the student to reach their goals.

Volunteer are asked to commit between one to four hours per week with a student, and this time can be split into multiple tutoring sessions per week at the discretion of the tutor and the student.
