What are some common challenges faced by professionals in flexible book binding, and how can they be addressed?

In flexible book binding, professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency in binding quality, handling a variety of materials, and meeting tight production deadlines. To address these, it's crucial to develop strong attention to detail, stay updated with the latest binding techniques, and communicate effectively with team members in printing, design, and finishing. Additionally, proactive maintenance of equipment and continuous skill improvement can help ensure high-quality results and efficient workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible book binder?

To thrive as a Flexible Book Binder, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and understanding of bookbinding materials and processes, often supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with specialized binding equipment, cutting tools, adhesives, and sometimes digital printing systems is crucial. Patience, problem-solving skills, and a focus on quality craftsmanship help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure the production of durable, attractive books that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What is flexible book binding?

Flexible book binding is a traditional bookbinding technique where the book cover is made from leather or cloth that is flexible, rather than rigid. This method allows the book to open more easily and lie flat, making it more comfortable to handle and read. Flexible binding is often used for higher-quality books, such as bibles or special editions, and involves sewing the pages together before attaching the flexible cover. The process requires skill and attention to detail to ensure durability and a professional finish.

Job description

Title: Reinsurance and Portfolio Underwriter

Location: Morristown, NJ (Hybrid/Flexible)

Reporting to: SVP, Chief Ops & UW Officer, Risk Entities

About Hippo:

Hippo was built on a promise: make homeownership effortless. Nearly a decade later, that mission still drives us. We use technology and data to help our customers stay ahead of problems and protect what matters most.

Today, that same tech-native approach powers our work beyond homeowners. Hippo operates as a diversified carrier platform, partnering with MGAs to deliver tailored program solutions that help them grow and deliver better customer experiences. Behind that work is a team that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

If you're energized by building what's next, we'd love to meet you.

About This Role:

The Reinsurance and Portfolio Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and monitoring assumed reinsurance transactions, program and MGA business, and providing underwriting diligence on strategic initiatives in support of the Reinsurance and Portfolio Management department.

This role operates with broad scope across multiple underwriting workstreams rather than a single fixed book, and requires the ability to evaluate risk quality and make sound underwriting decisions across unfamiliar lines and deal structures with minimal lead time.

This role allows the Partner Programs and Ceded Reinsurance teams to remain focused on their core relationship and portfolio responsibilities by absorbing time-sensitive underwriting evaluation work as it arises.

What You'll Do:

Assumed Reinsurance Underwriting and Monitoring

  • Evaluate and underwrite assumed reinsurance transactions sourced directly or through reinsurance intermediaries.
  • Monitor and report on assumed reinsurance portfolio performance, identifying emerging risk and performance trends.

Program and MGA Underwriting and Monitoring

  • Underwrite business produced through program administrators and MGAs.
  • Evaluate underwriting guidelines, appetite, binding authority terms, and rate adequacy.
  • Monitor and report on book performance on an ongoing basis, managing the relationship with program administrators and MGAs against agreed parameters.

Special Projects

  • Provide underwriting judgment and risk assessment support on strategic initiatives, including partnerships, investments, and acquisitions.
  • Assess the quality and risk profile of a target's book of business as part of due diligence.

Portfolio Support

  • Assess the marginal fit and contribution of new business to the overall portfolio.
  • Support work across both Owned and Partner Programs teams as needed, based on project requirements.

What You Bring:

  • 10+ years of P&C underwriting experience, spanning both property and casualty lines
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Demonstrated ability to underwrite unfamiliar lines of business and deal structures with minimal ramp-up time
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently without a fixed book or single line of accountability
  • Strong analytical judgment for evaluating risk quality in non-standard or unfamiliar structures

Nice to Have:

  • Reinsurance underwriting experience, including assumed treaty or facultative business
  • Program or MGA underwriting experience, including evaluation of delegated underwriting authority
  • Experience working with underwriting data and analytical tools

Benefits and Perks:

Hippo treats its team members with the same level of dedication and care as we do our customers, which is why we're fortunate to provide all of our Hippos with:

  • Healthy Hippos Benefits - Multiple medical plans to choose from and 100% employer covered dental & vision plans for our team members and their families. We also offer a 401(k)-retirement plan, short & long-term disability, employer-paid life insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for health and dependent care, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Equity - This position is eligible for equity compensation
  • Training and Career Growth - Training and internal career growth opportunities
  • Flexible Time Off - You know when and how you should recharge
  • Little Hippos Program - We offer 12 weeks of parental leave for primary and secondary caregivers
  • Hippo Habitat - Snacks and drinks available and catered lunches for onsite employees

The Morristown, NJ base pay range for this role is $175,000-$265,000. Exact compensation may vary based on several job-related factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to: skill set, experience, education/training, location, business needs and market demands.

Hippo is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to building a team culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion.

Hippo's applicants are considered solely based on their qualifications, without regard to an applicant's disability or need for accommodation. Any Hippo applicant who requires reasonable accommodations during the application process should contact the Hippo's People Team to make the need for an accommodation known.Â
