What is a first year plumbing apprentice?

A First Year Plumbing Apprentice is an entry-level worker who is learning the plumbing trade under the supervision of licensed plumbers. Apprentices typically complete both classroom instruction and on-the-job training, where they assist with tasks like measuring, cutting, and installing pipes, and learning about plumbing systems and safety protocols. The apprenticeship is usually the first step toward becoming a fully qualified plumber, and the first year focuses on foundational skills and basic knowledge. During this period, apprentices earn a wage while gaining practical experience. Successful completion of the apprenticeship can lead to higher-level positions and eventual licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a first year plumbing apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a First Year Plumbing Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of math, mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, as well as safety certifications like OSHA 10, are typically required. Strong communication skills, reliability, and a willingness to learn help apprentices excel in team environments and adapt to the demands of the trade. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safety, quality workmanship, and steady progress in the apprenticeship.

What are some typical challenges faced by first year plumbing apprentices, and how can they overcome them?

First year plumbing apprentices often encounter challenges such as adjusting to physically demanding work, learning technical skills on the job, and understanding industry safety protocols. Adapting to early start times and working in various weather conditions can also be tough. To overcome these challenges, apprentices should be proactive in asking questions, consistently follow safety guidelines, and seek feedback from experienced plumbers. Building a strong work ethic and staying organized will help them succeed as they progress through their apprenticeship.

We are a small, skilled team that works closely together on projects, and we maintain multiple licensed plumbers so apprentices can continue earning 01 hours and developing their commercial plumbing skills.

We prioritize steady, year-round work for our team. Our goal is to keep our plumbers working consistently without seasonal layoffs, while building a strong, reliable crew that takes pride in high-quality work.

Our plumbers work a 4/10 schedule (4 work days), giving you a consistent three-day weekend. We know that fewer commute days and more predictable time off means you can spend more time living your life beyond work - for friends, family, travel and what matters to you.

Qualifications
  • 2nd–3rd year plumbing apprentice working toward an 01 license
  • Mindset: ready to learn and tackle what the job brings
  • Ready to be a part of a team that cares
  • Experience with all phases of restaurant plumbing projects preferred
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass a background check

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with installation of plumbing systems on commercial construction and TI projects
  • Assist with commercial gas piping installation
  • Trim out commercial spaces, including installation of sinks, faucets, fixtures, and final plumbing connections
  • Read and work from blueprints and construction plans
  • Support testing and inspection of plumbing systems
  • Troubleshoot installation issues with lead plumbers
  • Ensure all work complies with Washington plumbing code and safety standards

Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the physical demands of commercial construction plumbing, including lifting up to 75 lbs, working on ladders or lifts, and frequent bending, kneeling, and overhead work.

Benefits
  • 4/10 work schedule (four 10-hour days)
  • Three-day weekends every week
  • Paid holidays
  • 4+ weeks paid vacation
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (100% employer paid)
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Opportunity to earn 01 hours
  • Company truck and gas card for qualified employees
