What You'll Do:

  • The primary responsibility of a Indiana First Steps provider is to evaluate and provide treatment for pediatric patients between the ages of birth and three years with needs in the areas of physical, social-emotional, self-help, communication, and cognitive development.
  • First Steps at APT, while working primarily in children's natural environments (homes, daycares, community centers, etc.) also have the opportunity to work in other APT offices and contract locations, depending on the counties/areas served.


First Steps Developmental Therapist Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Requirements:

  • Treat children from birth to age 3 for cognitive and social interaction skills to achieve highest level of functioning and to prevent regression.
  • Work closely with patients' caregivers and the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) through a Coaching Model.
  • Accurately document treatment sessions as well as progress or evaluation reports in detail.
  • Maintain professional/technical competencies and proficiencies for job responsibilities and uphold federal/state licensure and ethical expectations.

Requirements

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in early childhood or special education (with an early childhood focus)
  • Individuals with a bachelor's degree in communication disorders (including a bachelor's degree in speech and language) may be considered for a more specific communication-focused role (DT-C)
  • Individuals with related degrees may be considered if they have completed at least 15 hours of academic coursework related to child development
  • Preferred candidates have at least one year of experience providing Part C early intervention services, and would be considered as an early childhood specialist (DT-EC)
  • Ability to travel to homes, daycares, and other community settings within the service area
  • Ability to adapt to needs of patients and caregivers within their natural environments
  • Ability to be flexible with patients and re-schedule as needed
  • Excellent communication skills - oral and written


  • First-year developmental therapists with no previous Part C early intervention experience must enroll at the associate level (DT-A) and receive one year of supervision to ensure professional competency.
  • After one year of supervision, DT-A may request enrollment as DT-EC or DT-C
